I don't agree with most of Romney's policies but he was one of the few reasonable people left in the GOP.
From the article: "Frankly, it's time for a new generation of leaders," the 76-year-old Republican said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. "They're the ones that need to make the decisions that will shape the world they will be living in."

Romney is old guard GOP.
Regardless of his servitude to his rich donors, he still wanted a strong America.
Today's Republican Party has only one goal.
Destroy the United States of America.

Romney could be a tone deaf block head and his running mate was a little ----.
As Republicans go he would have made an acceptable President least in terms of personal character.

The only Republican Senator who voted to impeach Trump is stepping down because of his age. Clearly a signal to Trump, Biden, McConnell and Pelosi.

Romney went against the Trump Cult. He has no place in the GOP.

Romney, aka Pierre Delecto, is a lying POS. He is quitting because he does not want the embarrassment of losing his primary like Liz Cheney. He was a stain on America from his stint at Bain to his laughable terms as a Senator. Good riddance!

I seem to recall that one of Romney's sons is still in the venture capital business. That would be a nice soft landing spot for a Senate retiree who knows there are still many other flocks out there to fleece.
OTOH, it wouldn't surprise me if this retirement thing isn't just a sneaky ploy to cover up his intent to run for President, on the premise that Republican voters are looking for an alternative to Trump and DeSantis. In which case, he might not be wrong, since the bellwether State of Iowa is showing clear indications of sharp Republican decline in the early polls.
Queen Ann probably still has the measurements for the Oval Office drapes in her hope chest ~ if you get the drift.

Romney explored creating new political party with Manchin: book thehill.com
... Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) explored creating a new political party with fellow centrist Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), according to an excerpt released Wednesday in Romney's forthcoming biography. "They'd talked about the prospect before, but it was always hypothetical. Now Romney wanted to make it real," the book excerpt reads. "His goal for the yet-unnamed party ... would be to promote the kind of centrist policies he'd worked on with Manchin in the Senate." Romney's plans for the party, according to the biography excerpt, would not be to support a separate candidate, but to "pledge support to the candidate who came closest to aligning with its agenda." The "working slogan" for the party, Romney said in the book, was "stop the stupid." "We'd say, This party's going to endorse whichever party's nominee isn't stupid,'" Romney told the biographer. ...

I never liked that he was an absolute squish. Seems like a decent man in his personal life but I never cared for him as a politician.
I did however like that little short he did with Sinema where he was dressed up as Ted Lasso and she was Rebecca.

Romney wanted to help govern in good faith.
Which is why there is no place for him in today's Republican party.

Perhaps Romney thought/hoped today's Republican Party was the same as his father's Republican Party. If so, he's certainly been rudely disabused of that notion. In a way, I hate seeing him disappear from the scene. It's not actually because of him; there was, after all, always a lot of "Mr. Empty Suit" about "Mr. Corporations Are People, My Friend." What his departure represents, in a larger sense, is the departure of the type of pol with whom it was actually possible, on occasion, to strike a deal that might help push through legislation that positively affected people's lives.

A couple of comments...
Campaigns are designed to change poll results.
But, in this instance, I suspect the more important parameter is that the Republican voters of Utah have been mesmerized by idolatry of fmr Pres Trump.
