Some 12.4% of children were in poverty last year, up from a record low of 5.2% the year before in large part because Congress did not renew a Covid-19 pandemic enhancement to the child tax credit, according to Census Bureau data released Tuesday.

The child poverty rate plummeted in 2021, thanks largely to a major, but temporary, boost to the child tax credit in the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan Act. It beefed up payments to $3,600 for each child up to age 6 and $3,000 for each one ages 6 through 17, for lower- and middle-income families for 2021. For the first time, half the credit was paid in monthly installments from July through December that year, while parents could claim the other half when they filed their 2021 taxes.

That boost lifted 2.1 million children above the poverty line in 2021, according to the Census Bureau. Other studies also found that the additional funds had a significant impact on reducing hardship among families with kids.

But since Congress did not extend the beefed up credit beyond 2021, the gain was short-lived. A group of Democratic lawmakers have been trying to revive the enhanced credit and unsuccessfully sought last year to tie it into a Republican wish-list item of extending certain corporate tax breaks.

America's children would like to send out a huge middle finger salute to Corporacrat Sen. Joe Manchin for standing in the way of extending this tax credit because he didn't think it was necessary. And let this serve as another sterling example that today's MAGA GOP doesn't give a tinker's damn about impoverished children, while GOP state governments and federal politicians want to guarantee that millions more are birthed against the wishes and real concerns of the women now forced to carry them to term ... or through their own life-threatening situations including death.

There is nothing that screams 'pro-life' more than literally taking sustenance from the mouths of babies and children with one hand while bestowing trillion dollar tax breaks to billionaires and corporations with the other hand like DC Republicans do.

The US is dead last in the Top 25 Country Economies in Low Poverty Rate... Just behind Mexico.

We can thank our Corporate Masters who have had the wisdom to purchase our Congress and Supreme Court lock, stock, and barrel... all of the Republicans and some of the Democrats, assuring that capital continues to flow up and hardly ever out, or, God forbid, down.

Where are the conservative Teddy Roosevelts to break up the Monopolies and FDRs to level the playing field?

As a society, we decided that what we need is more hungry kids.

If it's an "oh no,,,, we didn't know that was going to happen,,,," situation, we sure do know now.

We make the decision, every day, that as a society we are in need of more hungry kids.

Nicholas Kristof "The One Privilege Liberals Ignore"

"We are often reluctant to acknowledge one of the significant drivers of child poverty " the widespread breakdown of family " for fear that to do so would be patronizing or racist."
www.nytimes.com

Lumpers "talk left but walk right", Lumpers argue single-parent families are no different to married ones; but usually end up getting married and raising children in a traditional nuclear family.

Not to worry, the narrative depends on its Lumpers never having to experience firsthand any of the nonsense they inflict on others.

"Lumpers argue single-parent families are no different to married ones"

I've never heard anyone say that.

Since two parent families are so much better than one parent families, we should look into three, four, five, and six parent families.

It's just like Hillary Clinton said: It takes a village to raise a child.

That's not the reason liberals don't talk about this problem much. We avoid talking about this problem because it's shaming and not helpful to do so.

Two-parent families have better results than single-parent families? Seems obvious enough. But what does that mean for people in their actual lives? Are you advocating for people to stay in bad or abusive relationships just to make sure kids have two parents around? Are you gonna tell people whose marriages have become untenable that they have to stay together for the kids? I know from experience that having two parents in the same house that hate each other is a lot worse than having two parents who live separately who can get along with each other fine.

Saying this stuff and citing these statistics doesn't help anyone, it just blames and shames people.

Liberals encourage people to have *better* marriages. That includes things like marrying later and not forgetting that sexual compatibility is important. It also includes things like learning to use birth control so that you don't get pregnant and locked into a terrible relationship super early in life. And we liberals would love to give more resources to mental healthcare and other things that would help people keep their relationships strong, we just can't get the conservatives to do so.

You know what we don't want to do? Just tell single parents that they're bad and they're ruining their children's lives.

Not helping anyone?
That's the Republican M.O.

Republicans don't have any solutions.
Other than "don't be poor."

There would be a lot more two parent families if the playing field were level enough that both parents don't have to werk full time plus just to get by.

That stresses the very institution of marriage.

In some capitalist social democracies, people rarely werk more than 40 hours, have 6 weeks vacation, and years paid leave with the birth of a child.

Not to mention free healthcare and education among other perks that are in this country reserved for high corporate suits.

If you're not rich and you want to start a family, you're financially better off divorcing your husband and getting free medical care for single mothers.

In the 80's when my father was dying in the hospital with mounting medical bills that my mother would have been liable for, they followed the attorney's advice and divorced.

Which still carried a stigma in those days.

FDR was considered a liberal, and most Dems vote for policies such as his, but you're right, more has to be done to bring the swing voters out way.

It may turn out that Trump is enough to push them left.

I would have been surprised if it were otherwise.
The Republican Party has only two planks in its platform, really. The first is to take from the poor and give to the rich, and the second is to embrace the Southern Strategy of racist division and ginning up racial animus. The second is the reason they win the Electoral College even thought they pretty constantly lost the popular vote. And that is how Trump stole the Republican Party from them, one hateful action and comment at a time.

Can any Republican who posts here justify ending the Child Tax Credit and extending corporate tax breaks at the same time?

Manchin represents the state with the fourth highest child poverty rate, over 23%. WTF was he thinking? He was taking food from the mouths of his own constituents.

Most likely thinking about driving home in his Maserati to sip chardonnay on his yacht.

You really want to do something to prevent single parent families then deal with abusive spouses. Most single mothers ended up single because they married jerks, they didn't choose to raise kids alone but it became necessary when their husbands became violent one too many times.

Where do most poor children live?

In states with the most draconian abortion laws of course
