... The VA has twice given lawmakers top-line numbers of how many abortions the department has performed. Most recently, in May, the VA said it had done 54 abortions between September 2022, when the policy was implemented, and April 30.

But Republicans on the House Veterans Affairs Committee had requested quarterly updates on the data, which have not come. They also wanted a more detailed breakdown of the information, which the VA has declined to provide, citing privacy concerns.

"The American taxpayers funding these abortion procedures at VA deserve to know how VA is carrying out the" policy, committee Chairman Mike Bost, R-Ill., and Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, R-Iowa, who chairs the committee's health subpanel, wrote in a letter Thursday to VA Secretary Denis McDonough.

"Failure to provide the requested information to the committee by Sept. 30, 2023, will force the committee to consider all tools at the committee's disposal, including scheduling a vote to issue a subpoena for the requested information," they added in the letter, a copy of which was obtained by ahead of its release.

The VA told it received the letter and "will respond directly" to Bost and Miller-Meeks. ...

@#1 ... "The American taxpayers funding these abortion procedures at VA deserve to know how VA is carrying out the" policy,...

The American taxpayers seem to be in disagreement with the Republicans' views on abortion. So, maybe committee Chairman Mike Bost, R-Ill., and Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, R-Iowa may want to rephrase their comment?

I would imagine come voting time the American taxpayer is going to show the GOP just what they think of the present policy on abortion, especially the women. Seems they've already forgotten about the red landslide they were anticipating that didn't happen last voting session. If you think the women have forgiven the snatching away of their rights and the legislating over their bodies, there's a wakeup call coming.

Truman desegregated military bases and in doing so made it very clear they're federal property and the states don't get to decided the laws on them.

No, state laws can still apply due to the Assimilative Crimes Act. There's also Concurrent Jurisdiction, and civil matters which are not part of the UCMJ at all and get handled under state law.

Freedom and conservative authoritarianism can not coexist.

Americans across this nation have been losing their right to justice and equality.

Conservatism is a cancer.

Also have to point out, abortions have nothing to do with military bases. They don't do them there. It's done at the VA clinics which are mostly on leased private property subject to state taxes, etc. If it's even done at the clinic. The VA will only approve abortions if the mother will die or in case of ----------.

The VA does not offer elective abortions. It's quite conservative in its approach, or at least what was generally viewed as conservative 2 years ago.

GOP subpoenas are optional. They made the rules during the T***p presidency.

VA doesn't operate on military bases except for some small offices to assists members mustering out and applying for VA benefits.

How much more obvious can it be, that Republicans are trying to destroy our American Way of Life?

What? lol. They didn't even offer abortions until 2 years ago.

and they only reason the VA added is because the SCOTUS overturned Roe V Wade. It's always going to be a very contentious point, but "American Way of Life"? No lol. Good hyperbole at best.

"SCOTUS overturned Roe V Wade."

Is that the American way of life to you? Right getting clawed back, rather than advancing?

Remember when you were pretending to be a Democrat?

Has the VA tried telling the lawyers to shove it and see what happens when you try to take the records?

... Folks, I'd like to sing a song about the American Dream
About me, about you
About the way our American hearts beat way down in the bottom of our chests
About that special feeling we get in the cockles of our hearts
Maybe below the cockles
Maybe in the sub cockle area
Maybe in the liver, maybe in the kidneys
Maybe even in the colon, we don't know

Good thing for Dennis Leary that Bill Hicks died so Leary could steal all Hicks' stuff.
