... Beijing is keeping quiet about the disappearance. The only official clue emerged when Vietnamese authorities said that Li's ministry last week cancelled his trip to Hanoi for "health reasons".

But sources in Washington offered a different explanation. Speaking to the Financial Times on condition of anonymity, several US officials said that Li could be the target of a corruption investigation, which could have prompted Chinese authorities to discreetly remove the defence minister from his post just six months after his appointment by President Xi.

Reuters reported on Friday that Li is under investigation by Chinese authorities, citing 10 people described as being familiar with the matter. ...

Not that I'd want to live there, but China probably thinks much the same of us. When you're a country that has what appears to be a unified government and deals regularly with rolling five-year plans, how do you interact with a country with a short attention span that considers nothing past the next two-year election or fundraising cycle, ever-shifting policies based on internal cultural differences, and obvious morons in elected positions?

I was talking to a yoot a few years back and I mentioned the topic of Polish jokes.

I was shocked to learn that they no longer exist amongst the younger generation, at least according to the individual with whom I was conversing. The loss to humanity is unfathomable.
