My Mother was killed by a drunk driver when she was three months pregnant in 1966. I was all of eight and I was the only one not hurt. My Dad was pinned by the steering wheel, my Mother went through the windshield and my sister followed her. My brother was the last to go out and he had his ear cut off and re-attached. He also had a head injury seeing how he was a little over one year old. It affected him greatly in his life. The driver who hit us was doing 85 in a 40 mile per hour zone. To this day, I can still hear the crash in my head, ears and mind. If it can save just one life, I'm all for it. I wish it had been available in 1966; my Mother could potentially still be alive today.

I tend to drive pretty fast, but seldom over 100 mph. Certainly not unless I'm below the border on an Interstate.

I survived my high school years when I often hit 120 mph in a '65 Polara on $150 worth of K-Mart retread bias ply tires.

I shudder at the thought now.

Here in this part of Connecticut, the state highways are little more than a widening and paving of the old (so very old) Indian and cattle paths of yore.

Yes, you can tell a state highway from a similar back road because the state highway has the fog line on the right side of the road.

Aside from that, you're on your own here.

Do try to avoid the trees, though.

@#3 ... has the fog line on the right side of the road. ...

If you have never had to rely upon that fog line, well, kudos.

But I will say that the fog line of the CT state highways have been quite helpful for me in the past.

There is a reason why they are called "fog line."

I do not state that whimsically.

There are rare times when 100 mph might be appropriate, such as a road rage idiot with gun, intent on you being the target. That's not often that happens. Young adults tend to think they are bullet proof, they want know how fast the vehicle will go without considerations. Drunks are a problem as well when it comes to driving, not to mention cell phones.

Mostly I am grateful for cruise control. I can get on the interstate, set it, and forget about my speed and just concentrate on driving. There will always be those who want to go faster. In ways on the interstate I love to see that. It means the next cop stop won't be me. I don't need to run along behind them to watch the action, I'm quite content to arrive on the scene long after the stop has occurred.

Still we have the high speed hazard here. It comes from the coyotes (the name given those smuggling in illegals) and they often get in high speed chases locally. The last one that was close to me occurred a couple of months ago. The highway patrol put out the tire spikes downtown. The coyote drove another few blocks and they all bailed not two blocks from my home. That's not to say how many others have passed on by and not be close to me. That happens near every week or so. Some wind up wrapped around trees, some wind up going in people's houses, vehicle and all before they bail. The last one that happened last week, involved a high speed chase, on a two lane, where the coyote lost control of his SUV and headoned another. 8 people died in a fiery crash.

Mostly vehicles today are speed limited. If you just got to race, it requires you buying a special chip that allows the motor to rev higher. Honestly, I'm happy to see that. While it won't prevent you from breaking the speed limit, it will prevent you from doing a flat foot on the throttle speed run at higher speeds. Still there is no substitute for driver experience and caution on the road.

I was headed down the interstate with traffic in a three lane.

I was in the far left lane. There was an 18 wheeler, two actually, to my right. A concrete wall to my left.

Traffic was going about 88 miles an hour (meaning everyone, even the trucks).

Cars were backed up behind me and I noticed I was that one thing I hate the most, people going slower than traffic in the left passing lane.
The 18 wheelers were long and several cars were beside them with me blocking the traffic from passing them.

If my car wasnt comfortably able to do above 110+ mph, I couldnt have gotten out of the flow of traffic.

Cars should be able to do at least 120+.

What you should do, is at the very heart of what makes us American. The ability to do something and suffer the just consequences of those decisions.

The stats FTA are a bit misleading, perhaps intentionally. "Speeding was a factor in 33% of accidents" but when you look at the DOT stats you see that in those accidents alcohol was a contributing factor at much higher rates. The drivers in those accidents were also much more likely to not have a license. And we can't forget the biggest menace to the increasing rates of accidents, distracted drivers on their f-n phones.
crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov

Boaz in his Mustang going 120 on z-rated tires on the interstate is a danger to no one (except himself when he gets pulled over and shot by a cop for DWB). Karen in a Tahoe going 70 on that same road with two kids in the back and her phone dinging is far far more dangerous. But sadly we write laws factoring down to the lowest common denominator.
If we are going to put governors on cars they should correspond with the weight and tire rating of the vehicle.

On a slight side note, here in Santa Barbara e-bikes are the cool new trend with teens. They dont even want cars. Everyone has one. They come from the factory limited to 15mph. To unlock it all you have to do is email the company, sign a form saying you dont intend to use it on the road and they give you the unlock code, then they will do ~35mph. The cops don't seem to give a ----.
My friends 13yo daughter has one and is completely independent, takes it to school or dance practice or whatever. But I'm curious what will happen if they strike a pedestrian or car with a jail-broken bike. We'll see, I guess.

20 years ago during our business years in NH, we bought a Honda S-2000, 4 cyl 2 seater, 275 hp that tached out at 10.5K. It was a zippy little devil that was wicked fun to drive. I opened it up one day on a 2 mile straightaway on I-89, a rural interstate that usually had little traffic. Based on the tack vs speed in 6th gear, it theoretically should have been able to pass 165mph, but when I hit 110, I realized the car was going way faster than my brain, and I backed off and never went over into 3 digits again.

Years later we had to drive into the Phoenix airport a couple of times on I-10 about 8 years ago. I-10 has a 75mph speed limit, which means everyone is going 80+, right thru downtown Phoenix-a total death trap which we refuse to drive through again to this day. You want to visit us, rent a car, 'cause we ain't com'n to get ya!

IOW boaz is saying is it is American to have a car that goes 120 MPH because Americans have the right to do something and suffer the consequences of it. That is what boaz said. I simply point out that boaz ignores the fact that the consequences often impact others and that type of attitude is childish.

where I misrepresented boaz
He gave a specific anecdote for why he needed to drive 120mph: a crowded road where he is impeding traffic, everyone around him is breaking the law and his car needs the ability to accelerate clear of the 75,000lb battering rams on drum brakes near him safely. This is something anyone who drives is familiar with. Maybe you need to merge onto the 405 on a Monday morning, everyone is doing 90+, no one has room to clear the right lane for you and you dont want to get rear-ended by the Suburban behind you on the phone. There are dozens of examples of why you might need to exceed the posted speed limit.

Your response to that is, "Boaz supports wildly excessive speeding". "wildly excessive" carries the benefit of being both inflammatory and vague. Wildly excessive to whom? You? Is it excessive is relation to the people around him going 90? Is it wildly excessive or unsafe if he's in 911 GTS between two semis and a Jersey wall?
Who are the "suffering innocents" in his scenario you're pretending to be so concerned about?

Where I live some people like to take their cars to the drag strip. It's a safe and controlled way to race. A simple Mustang GT will hit 110 at the end of a quarter mile.

Montana doesn't really enforce much of a speed limit on clear dry days when traffic is low. People will cruise at 120.

I don't know what is being advocated. Top speed governors that top out at 90?

No, you inserted your own "context".

You need high performance, cars capable in excess of 100+, to get onto a freeway.
A new Camry can do 100, is that high performance? And yes, on occasion you might need enough power to match the flow of traffic on a short ramp merging onto the freeway. Having a government installed restricter kickin at 90, or whatever it is that being suggested, is at least as dangerous as exceeding the speed limit.
What State are you driving in?

No, you won't. I'm in Houston. Fastest I've been on I-10 is 160mph in a Supra. Very high average freeway speeds here, whatever the limit is add +10 to +15. Despite that, every slow SUV with 0-60 in the high 8s is already more than adequate for that environment and has no problems merging from short ramps.

The real problem is mostly drunks though, so ignition interlocks for everybody. Better get an adapter for the cell phone that's the key to most modern luxury cars.

Exactly. Which is what the DOT stats suggest. Speeding alone is rarely the cause of traffic accidents. It's speeding + drunk, speeding + road conditions, speeding + distractions. When you were going 160 on the freeway I imagine you were the most alert driver in a 10 mile radius because an urge to occasionally drive fast doesn't necessary mean you want to die or kill someone else.

In Germany, getting a drivers lisnce is a significant emotional experience that costs thousands of dollars, classroom work, practicals, and simulators. Yes. Simulators.

Do you ever get stuck behind someone who is dicking around with their phone at a stoplight? That really doesn't happen in Germany.

Back in my younger, crazier years (let's just say, five or so decades ago), I got a speeding ticket for doing 90+ in a 65mph zone.

To be honest, at the time, I was slowing down (yeah, that 90+ was me slowing down) for the toll booths ten miles or so ahead of me.

Nowadays, when I hit 5-over, well, that's my limit.

The speed doesn't thrill as it used to back, way back, then.

(and, please don't ask me about that 80+ ticket on the Cross Bronx Expressway. I still maintain that 80+ is not possible, geesh - 50+ is not even possible, on the Cross Bronx Expressway.)

On the highway I set the cruise at about 5 over the limit. That way I don't have to worry about getting pulled over for speeding. I'd prefer to drive much faster but it's not worth the risk and vigilance of constantly trying to scout a trooper.

@#61 ... That way I don't have to worry about getting pulled over for speeding. ..

Unless you happen to be on the Taconic State Parkway in NY.

Been there, did that, got a ticket.

People are responsible for their votes as well as their rhetoric. Voting for Jill Stein in Kansas is one thing. The constant anti-Hillary diatribes are another. Laura defends both to this day. So be it. I know some folks IRL, however, who followed the same path as Laura right up through election day but then regretted it mightily when Trump was elected.

How about blaming Hillary for not getting our votes?? I know that makes way too much sense to me.

@#62 ... got a ticket...

btw, that ticket was from a State Trooper.

Not some local Barney Fife.

I certainly do. She was a horrid campaigner with all the charisma of head lice.

I'm sure most of her speechwriters wanted to hang themselves watching her delivery.

She would have been a better president than lewzer, but you have to get the job first.

Not that that has anything to do with speeding. :-)

I have a great solution.

Ditch the automobile and get some trains up in here. Problem solved.

@#65 ... She was a horrid campaigner ...

Oh yeah.

I remember, and still cringe, from her campaign stop at some (high school?) gym.

And she totally killed her campaign at that stop.

Anybody who didn't vote for Hillary because they thought she was a bad campaigner gave us Donald Trump.

How do you feel about that, now that you know he's using his one term in office as a platform to set himself up as the dictator of an autocracy?

You can say goodby to Democracy.

Guaranteed you won't have this site to vent on any more. Dictators consider Freedom of the Press an enemy of the people ~~ according to Donald Trump.

How about you putting your hatred of Hillary above what was best for the country?

You're just as guilty as James Comey.

#63 Nothing Hillary could have done would have gotten you to vote for her. Even Bernie telling you to vote for her didn't convince you.

It's not a lie to blame Hillary for not getting my vote. But do cry me a river about me not voting for her. It's all you've got left.

No one make laws or regulations for fun. They are created when a selfish or stupid person was doing something that was harming other people
