Congress at the urging of the Biden administration agreed in 2021 to spend $7.5 billion to build tens of thousands of electric vehicle chargers across the country, aiming to appease anxious drivers while tackling climate change. Two years later, the program has yet to install a single charger.

Government installs them where they would be needed.

... Is it a government problem? ...

From the summary...

... While federal officials have authorized more than $2 billion of the funds to be sent to states, fewer than half of states have even started to take bids from contractors to build the chargers " let alone begin construction. ...

So, it looks like the Federal government has allocated funds to the states, and the states are dragging their feet.

Or as noted they're dealing with the fed at the rate that's realistically possible, given how tedious and expensive that is. In the airshow industry they have special classes on how navigate the system and get paid when you contract to the govt shows. Easy, fast, deregulated are 3 words that don't apply.

That's a pretty stupid position to take. Need doesn't correlate to profitability.

A charger may not be used enough to be profitable but still be needed.

A charger may be profitable and needed but not profitable enough to convince anyone to install it without the funding.

If profitability were all that mattered, we would get rid of most utilities to rural communities.

How many of these state politicians are getting Oil Money not to implement
these plans? I bet the percentage is pretty damned high, especially in the south.
A good investigative reporter ought to look into that...

Also, I always thought it was a mistake by Biden that he did not appoint an
eco-czar to oversee this implementation. To make sure the money to transform
the economy to a more green economy, went where it was supposed to, and was
spent as it was meant to be.

Never been to Rural America have you? Often a larger rural of town of 5,000-10,000 people with have the Walmart that serves all the surrounding communities.

#26 | Posted by Sycophant at 2023-12-07 10:46 AM | Reply

That's specifically what I was referring to. 30 minute+ drive from the rural farm well off the highway to the City of Warrensburg (population 19k), the closest walmart having city (aka college town), where there's already 12 charging stations thanks to capitalism.

If you want to put charging stations in rural areas, better setup in actual rural areas, next to the Dollar General.

but that's stupid. Putting them in city Park N Rides is a project that's not.

Many (most?) state budgets are a bottomless pit when it comes to money received from the feds. I think they get this money and use the bulk of it to patch holes in other parts of the budget. They are obligated to spend some of it on the designated programs but I think the bulk of it is diverted off to pet projects (missing welfare money in Mississippi for example).
