Tennis champion Martina navaratilova is possibly the highest profile liberal so far to openly say that Donald Trump pretends to be Christian and is clearly a practicing atheist.

Sometimes you have to do Unthinkable in order to make a situation survivable. To make sure that Trump is not like the president we need to make sure that people know he's an atheist.

It sure does appear as if Trumpy is trying to start his own religion with him as the divinely appointed monarch. And unfortunately Christian's are naturally attracted to this type of leader as they are indoctrinated to believe the entire structure of the universe is "designed" that way. Apparently.

Don't worry, as I've learned we can say he isn't a "real" atheist and move on.

I'm obviously biased, Steffi Graf was my first crush. Martina Navratilova is boosted trash.

We should find out what SpongeBob SquarePants thinks about the massive support among Christians for Trump. Are the all just dopes? Easily mislead?

"In May of 2007 I went to L.A. to debate Sam Harris, and then two days later I went to San Francisco to debate Christopher Hitchens.

Up until that point, I hadn't paid much attention to the work of the New Atheists.

After reading what they had written and walking away from these debates, I was appalled at how what they had done for the secular left was to embrace the same kind of bigotry and chauvinism and intolerance that marks the radical Christian right.

I found that in many ways they were little more than secular fundamentalists."

secular fundamentalists
It's telling that when religious people want to insult atheists they compare us to religious people.

San Francisco to debate Christopher Hitchens
I still remember one of the great lines from that night as Hedges was justifying suicide murder and defending Saddam Hussein's regime.
"A perfect picture has been given to you of the cretinous relationship between sloppy moral relativism, half-baked absolutism, and the journalism that lies in between."
You could see Hedges melt into his seat.

Just when you think you've seen Corky hit rock bottom of his source material he goes and out does himself, again.

the New Atheists
There is nothing new about so-called New Atheists. The arguments haven't changed one bit from Lucretius and Epicurus to Spinoza and Hitchens. The only thing new is after 9/11 most of us stopped being polite to the delusional misanthropes actively destroying society - wishing, yearning and praying for it all to come to and end so they can go to their theme park in the sky.

Hedges is the quintessential leftist political agitator journalist... well, until he wants to point out what fundamentalist dicks secular atheists can be.

Most aren't, mind you.

Most were turned off by the New Atheists' New Fundamentalism, which is how they differed from traditional atheists, you know, to get attention.

Which is why everyone, well, almost everyone, is SO over them now.

quintessential leftist
ROFL
Presbyterian minister who came from Loomis Chaffee and Harvard to make a career complaining about "elitists".
Worked in Ralf Nader's war room, spoils the 2000 election by a few thousand votes and we get Bush.
Writes stories cited by Colin Powell in his infamous UN WMD cartoon slide show show that gets us into Iraq. He never vetted the so-called Iraqi defectors he interviewed who were feeding him nonsense he greedily gobbled up. Once we're in Iraq he switches sides, refuses to join the reporter pool and was one of the scumbags giving away American military positions. The US government kicked him out of the country, he sneaks back in, gets caught by the Iraqis and has to be rescued. All that gives him an angle to write a bunch of 'War is Bad, mkay' books. Plagiarism abounds. Lots of Lenin quotes.
He's the OG Hamas/Al Queada/IS apologist long before pro-Hamas protestors became cool.
Gets his ass handed to him several times in debates where the crowd was laughing out loud and mocking him, that butt-hurt lead directly to the whole "New Atheists" shtick.
Goes to work for Russian State television so he can blame the US for being mean to Putin.

"Class struggle defines most of human history. Marx got this right. It is not a new story. The rich, throughout history, have found ways to subjugate and re-subjugate the masses. And the masses, throughout history, have cyclically awoken to throw off their chains."

I don't think it is something to be ashamed of, he does. He pretends he is some street-smart activist after attending the most elite schools in the country.

Marx got this right
A wealthy "elitist" celebrity-journalist quoting Marx. He probably read the Communist Manifesto at Loomis Chaffee.
Because everyone knows, they best way for the Left to achieve power in America is to quote Marx and Lenin.

Clown.

Weird.
You only seem concerned about tone when it is directed at Christians while you constantly make personal jabs, usually vulgar and of a sexual nature. You rarely make an actual argument.

Here's the thing you clearly don't understand and will never admit: When you insult atheism, atheists, try to connect us to Trump or something else you deem 'bad'; We Don't Care. It doesn't matter to any of us at all. Non-belief is not like belief. Our non-belief takes up less than 1% of our lives, it doesn't make us who we are. Insulting our non-belief never has the effect you are hoping for.
You OTOH are grounded in belief. Without out it your whole world view collapses on itself. You've admitted many times it is the only thing keeping you from murder, rape, theft and lying. When we insult belief you have to take it personally.
The only way to not insult you, to never be "mean-spirited", is to not say anything at all. And that age of history is over. The religious monopoly on speech and thought is dead. It's never coming back. Get use to it and pray to your God for a thicker skin.

"Leading Atheist" is a term I have not encountered before.

The essence of atheism is that you don't need any leadership. All you need, as Thomas Paine put it, is "Common Sense."

But now I guess you're going to call Thomas Paine a Leading Atheist of his time.

The atheist philosopher of science Michael Ruse states that Richard Dawkins would fail "introductory" courses on the study of "philosophy or religion" (such as courses on the philosophy of religion), courses which are offered, for example, at many educational institutions such as colleges and universities around the world.[87][88]

Ruse also says that the movement of New Atheism"which is perceived by him to be "a bloody disaster""makes him ashamed, as a professional philosopher of science, to be among those holding to an atheist position, particularly as New Atheism, as he sees it, does science a "grave disservice" and does a "disservice to scholarship" at a more general level.[87][88]

Paul Kurtz, editor in chief of Free Inquiry, founder of Prometheus Books, was critical of many of the new atheists.[83]

He said, "I consider them atheist fundamentalists... They're anti-religious, and they're mean-spirited, unfortunately.

Now, there are very good atheists and very dedicated people who do not believe in God. But you have this aggressive and militant phase of atheism, and that does more damage than good".[7]

"There is no evidence for any god. Present some and I might change my mind."

This is how I feel, which I think technically puts me in the Agnostic category.

However, if we are to define G-d as a supernatural being, well, that concept does not make sense to me. I believe in empiricism and the scientific method. If it's not addressable via those tools, then I am not able to address the question. It's like asking me what does the color green taste like. I don't have a way to address that question. But I don't think that makes me an agnostic either.

Ha... bringing up theism is in itself meanspirited, which means you have an excuse to be meanspirited?

How convenient for you.

You might note that the thread is about Trump being described as an atheist.

And Hedges is a straight up socialist and an anarchist.... which is a bit left of me, but still a liberal who blames the liberal class in this country for not acting against the fascism of people like Trump who are their own gods, as I noted in #10.

Fascism Comes to America

The failure of the liberal class to halt the corporate assault on working people has spawned an ascendant Christian fascism that is poised to seize power and radically reshape America.
