Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, June 18, 2024

Peter Wehner: Motivated ignorance refers to willfully blinding oneself to facts. It's choosing not to know. In the case of MAGA world, the lies that Trump supporters believe, or say they believe, are obviously untrue and obviously destructive. I have struggled to understand how to view individuals who have not just voted for Trump but who celebrate him, who don't merely tolerate him but who constantly defend his lawlessness and undisguised cruelty.

Throughout my career I've tried to resist the temptation to make unwarranted judgments about the character of people based on their political views. For one thing, it's quite possible my views on politics are misguided or distorted, so I exercise a degree of humility in assessing the views of others. For another, I know full well that politics forms only a part of our lives, and not the most important part. People can be personally upstanding and still be wrong on politics.

But something has changed for me in the Trump era. I struggle more than I once did to wall off a person's character from their politics when their politics is binding them to an unusually - and I would say undeniably - destructive person. The lies that MAGA world parrots are so manifestly untrue, and the Trump ethic is so manifestly cruel, that they are difficult to set aside.

If a person insists, despite the overwhelming evidence, that Trump was the target of an assassination plot hatched by Biden and carried out by the FBI, this is more than an intellectual failure; it is a moral failure, and a serious one at that. It's only reasonable to conclude that such Trump supporters have not made a good-faith effort to understand what is really and truly happening. They are choosing to live within the lie, to invoke the words of the former Czech dissident and playwright Vaclav Havel.

One of the criteria that need to be taken into account in assessing the moral culpability of people is how absurd the lies are that they are espousing; a second is how intentionally they are avoiding evidence that exposes the lies because they are deeply invested in the lie; and a third is is how consequential the lie is.

It's one thing to embrace a conspiracy theory that is relevant only to you and your tiny corner of the world. It's an entirely different matter if the falsehood you're embracing and promoting is venomous, harming others, and eroding cherished principles, promoting violence and subverting American democracy.

Boom goes the dynamite. We can count the number of posters here on the Retort who mirror everything Wehner is talking about and then some. Denial isn't just a river in Egypt, it's the constant state of life for many reveling in the destruction of norms and standards left in the roiling wake of the malignant political wave known as MAGA. And many more are trying to insure that MAGA doesn't destroy almost 250 years of our living, breathing democracy, now struggling to survive the lies, treachery, and poison of MAGA whose bent on trying to destroy it for the sake of a lying sociopathic narcissist only out for himself.

H. L. Mencken was based in Baltimore, Maryland where he wrote for "The Sun" and its companion newspaper "The Evening Sun".

On September 18, 1926 he penned a column about the success of tabloid newspapers which included the following passage.

"No one in this world, so far as I know " and I have searched the records for years, and employed agents to help me " has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people.

Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby.

The mistake that is made always runs the other way.

Because the plain people are able to speak and understand, and even, in many cases, to read and write, it is assumed that they have ideas in their heads, and an appetite for more.

This assumption is a folly."

IOW, is this group of willful/motivated ignorant supporters growing at all?

Isn't polling telling us this group is shrinking?

The difference between winning and losing in the next election is going to be determined NOT by these morons...but the millions and millions of voters who are greatly concerned about Biden and might either stay home or do something really stupid and give their vote to Trump....even though they will tell you TODAY they can't stand Trump.

I was listening to a right wing talk show on WABC radio this am and a caller called in to complain about Biden. He accused Biden of doing nothing about the protests in 2020 following the George Floyd murder. The host, reluctantly, had to tell the caller that Biden was not the president then; that Trump was the president. By then, I had had enough and changed the station. I don't know if the caller's ignorance was willful or maybe he was just effin stupid; one of HRC deplorables.

Morris, a spiritual advisor to Donald Trump and who leads one of the largest churches in the country, is accused of abusing the woman multiple times in the 1980s, The Christian Post reported Saturday. She said the abuse happened in Oklahoma and Texas from 1982 to 1987, when Morris was in his 20s. The woman is now in her 50s.

A blog post from The Wartburg Watch identified the woman as Cindy Clemishire. The writer said Clemishire described the alleged abuse with specificity, down to the clothes she wore when the abuse took place. ...

There are long unedited videos of it happening.

Just another lie - a ban worthy one at that because it's blatant disinformation. What actually happened is showed in the wide angle view of the video. The distortion is the vertical cut that leaves out what Biden is reacting to in his background. The photos accompany the article showing exactly what I'm saying, yet we have another liar trying to project that his lies are in fact the truth. See for yourself: www.washingtonpost.com

If what he alleges was true then Musk's X wouldn't have printed a "community note" calling out its dishonesty.

An X community note was added to the video clip, saying: "Biden didn't wander off'. After viewing a skydiving demo with the other G-7 leaders, Biden stepped aside to speak with one of the other skydivers who is kneeling on the ground packing away his chute. The video in the above post has been digitally altered to remove the skydiver."

I believe them completely because we continue to see what raising Trump's ire means if you're a Republican who has to run for elective office.

Threats of violence against U.S. lawmakers hit a new high in the aftermath of President Donald Trump's 2020 election defeat and his subsequent impeachment over the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. The number of threats doubled last year to roughly 9,600, according to the Capitol Police, which has said its investigators are struggling to keep up with the workload.

The recent wave of indictments shows that pro-Trump individuals may be as likely to level death threats against Republicans as Democrats. No similar pattern has emerged on the political left.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia, posted online the names and phone numbers of 13 GOP lawmakers who supported the bill and called them "traitors" on Twitter (her account has since been suspended.)

Earlier this year, a retired railroad worker pleaded guilty to making a death threat against Rep. Andrew Garbarino, a New York Republican who voted for the infrastructure bill. The defendant, who was ordered to take anger management classes, was upset that the congressman he voted for had "switched sides," his attorney told the court.

Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger is one of only two Republicans serving on the House select committee on Jan. 6, which earned him the wrath of Trump loyalists and censure by the Republican National Committee. He also voted to impeach President Trump, and has announced he won't run for reelection.

He told the Monitor his office in Washington has seen "a large uptick" in violent calls and messages over the past year, without giving specifics.

www.csmonitor.com

Even though great numbers of Congressmembers are indeed wealthy, most have easily identifiable family or extended family members who may be targeted by enraged MAGAts. At minimum, Donald Trump is the first (and hopefully only) President to not only stoke the flames of violence in some of his cultish supporters, he openly - and proudly - espouses stochastic terrorism almost daily - lashing out at anyone and everyone who dares to hold him responsible for his own actions, many of them criminal in nature.

To me the fear mentioned above by GOP reps is as real as the car which ended the life of Heather Heyer and led to the assault on, injuries to, and eventual deaths of the police officers defending the Capitol on 1/6/21.

#27 | Posted by tonyroma at 2024-06-18 03:58 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

They're afraid of being ousted.

It's certainly the combination. For many of these folks, they've spent many years and beaucoup money to gain elected office and all it takes is pissing off Trump or standing against him to put it all at risk, for he will both call for and provide support to fellow MAGAs willing to primary anyone he claims offended or opposed him.

'Total Fiction': CNN Fact-Checker Exposes 30 Obvious Lies In New Trump Speech

Donald Trump's rally in Wisconsin on Tuesday was marked by so many falsehoods that CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale's attempt to list them rapid-fire still took three full minutes.

Dale told Abby Phillip he found 30 obvious lies. Some were his usual false claims and conspiracy theories about the 2020 election, while others had a newer origin, such as a reference to a "cheapfake" edit of footage of President Joe Biden at the G7 meeting that made the rounds of right-wing media.

"He said Biden wandered off at the G7 and didn't know where he was," Dale summarized. Then he delivered a correction: "No, Biden was briefly chatting with a skydiver who had landed near the group."

Dale also delivered quick fact-checks to Trump's claims about everything from Al Capone to Nancy Pelosi to taxes.

"He said Biden's plans would quadruple your taxes," Dale said. "Total fiction."

Don't assume the Biden's have clean hands.

No one has to assume anything about Joe Biden's income. For over 40 years, Joe Biden had one of the lowest - if not the lowest - net worth of all the members in Congress; it's documented. Barack Obama offered to loan Biden money after Beau's death because Joe was going to take out another loan on his property to pay for family expenses. These things are known in public.

Joe Biden only gained millionaire status AFTER he left the White House in 2017 due to book and speaking contracts along with his fellowship at UPenn. His tax returns are public record since he's continuously run for office for almost 50 years. If he's done something illegal or illicit it would have come out years ago.

This isn't saying that Biden is perfect because no one is. But we do know that he has no criminal acts or provable allegations in his past and there is no any evidence of questionable income in his financial records.

Speaking of motivated Ignorance ..

Transsexuals (a 3rd gender) have existed since ancient times. The phase did not become common until the 50s and 60s.

Accounts of transgender people (including non-binary and third gender people) have been identified going back to ancient times in cultures worldwide. The modern terms and meanings of transgender, gender, gender identity, and gender role only emerged in the 1950s and 1960s. As a result, opinions vary on how to categorize historical accounts of gender-variant people and identities.

The galli eunuch priests of classical antiquity have been interpreted by some scholars as transgender or third-gender. -wiki

Magnus Hirschfeld (1868-1935) the famous German Sexologist has coined the words transvestites and transsexuals in the beginning of the 20th Century. He established Institute for Sexual Science in 1919 at Berlin, which was destroyed by Nazis in 1933 (It is interesting to recall that he himself was a homosexual).

- It can, and is, happening here, now.

It is, and it's a disgusting fear-based performance by white nationalist rwingers... who are doing the same thing in Europe; fearmongering on immigrants fleeing bad governments and deadly hot climate change.

Both man made, usually by the bigger, wealthier countries where the Corporations and their billionaire owners back the rwing leaders they own.

" Don't assume the Biden's have clean hands."

Two things you can be sure of when reading something like this:

Number one, the person has nothing on Joe Biden, or would say his name specifically.

Number two, if a Republican did it, they be showering praise for smart business.

I contend that climate change doesn't loom large as an incentive to vote if you look at it in the context of massive illegal immigration...store closings due to rampant theft that goes un-prosecuted...high grocery prices. In civics class voting gets what the people voted for, not so much in real life

At this point it is clear that any comparison between Trump's massive decades-long pattern of criminality including fraud, tax invasion, outright theft, sexual perversion and much more, and the barely questionable activities of Joe Biden is just another gigantic example of right wing Magat false equivalence.

store closings due to rampant theft that goes un-prosecuted...

#70 | POSTED BY BRERRABBIT

So bad news...

Stores aren't closing due to rampant theft. CVS got caught lying about that themselves. And the National Retail Federation has come out and admitted theft is actually down over the last 5-10 years. The only theft that is up is supply chain theft (before it even gets to the store).

Well, if one isn't bright enough to understand that immigrants aren't coming here for the nice treatment they get, but are running from many decades of bad governments backed by corrupt major US interests, and temperatures that destroy crops and make life miserable... then one probably isn't trying to understand, and one is probably a rwinger anyway, and is always pleased to have someone to look down on.

store closings due to rampant theft that goes un-prosecuted

Just another gullible mind wallowing in the ignorance spewed by the Trumpist right wing media:

The alleged crime epidemic in places like San Francisco causing stores to flee may actually just be bad management, investment bank suggests

Retail theft in US cities: Separating fact from fiction

The fiction: Retail theft myths

There are three primary problems with the current retail theft narrative, which require policymakers' and the public's attention.

The first is a big one: Existing data on retail theft is highly unreliable and imprecise. First, "retail theft" is not an independent category reported by most police departments. Moreover, the terms increasingly used by industry and government officials - "organized retail crime" or "organized retail theft" - have no consistent legal definition across states and often encompass broader crimes such as cargo and employee theft (which are already associated with more severe sanctions). Even the California Retailers Association has acknowledged a lack of comprehensive and reliable data on retail theft.

The second is that shoplifting in major cities did not actually spike in the ways that media has reported. According to the Council on Criminal Justice, only 24 cities consistently reported shoplifting data over the past five years, and of those cities, shoplifting decreased in 17. Moreover, looking across all 24 cities, the prevalence of shoplifting in 2023 remained below 2018 and 2019 levels. Even San Francisco - which has often been cited as having a "shoplifting epidemic" - saw a 5% decline in shoplifting between 2019 and 2023.

Finally, corporate claims are not holding up to scrutiny, and are being used to close stores that are essential assets for many communities. Although the National Retail Federation said that "organized retail crime" drove nearly half of all inventory losses in 2021, the group later retracted its claim; it now no longer attaches a dollar amount to money that is lost due to retail theft. And in memorable cases, major retailers have chosen to maintain stores with much higher rates of crime, while closing others.

Why wouldn't we mention Texas? Since 2022, New York City has taken in 170,000 migrants that were MOSTLY sent on buses by Texas officials.

Here's what you do:
1. Pass a law and arrest any person facilitating the intentional busing of illegal immigrants to New York City without prior city government authorization. This includes bus drivers, companies owners, government officials, etc.
2. Renovate empty office buildings into low cost housing operated and managed by the city (More than 95 million square feet of New York City office space is currently unoccupied "the equivalent of 30 Empire State Buildings.)
3. Offer free bus tickets to migrants to anywhere the migrants actually intended to go since Texas lies to them about what's going on and where they are going.
4. Develop a migrant labor program to use migrants to clean up and repair run down areas of New York and learn job skills.
5. Offer $50,000 to any convicted violent felon and/or sex offender regardless of immigration status that is currently living in New York City who is willing to relocate to Texas for 5 years.
6. Seize Trump Tower and turn it into a migrant education facility for integration into US culture with English classes and job training. Call it the "Melania Trump is an illegal immigrant who lied on her immigration forms Center of Immigration".

Second, they are being enforced. But the immigration courts are backed up 3-4 years. Shame Republicans blocked ALL bills to fix that.

Can't read? That wouldn't be in bulk. 95% would likely stay in NYC.

"absolute poverty for sure...starting with american citizens, veterans for instance"
Why not both? You need rooms for both. But its so cute to see a Republican pretend to care about veterans.

"let them wait on the other side of the fence"
Sadly that was only allowed under Emergency COVID measures...which you ALL demanded be ended. That's on you.
We had a bill that put into law waiting on the other side regardless if numbers go too high...but you Republicans blocked it on Trump's orders.
