Mamdani Delivers Pro-Immigrant 250th Birthday Message

      <wordzilla:destination>https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jul/03/zohran-mamdani-america-250-new-york</wordzilla:destination>

New York's mayor, Zohran Mamdani, exalted the city's legacy of immigrants on Friday in a historically laden, ideological counterpoint to a US semiquincentennial address that was expected later in the day from Donald Trump " who has sought to deport immigrants en masse throughout his second presidency. Speaking from behind a desk at New York's city hall that belonged to the US's first president, George Washington, and which itself is a century older than the Resolute desk in the White House, Mamdani was surrounded by naturalized citizens like himself as he listed the waves of immigrants who shaped the city.

<wordzilla:extended>"Hundreds of thousands of Irish immigrants arrived with stomachs aching from a famine manufactured by imperial cruelty," Mamdani said. "Chinese sailors settled in what is today Chinatown. Millions more traveled under the Statue of Liberty and through Ellis Island. Jewish people escaping pogroms, Italians fleeing poverty. Syrians seeking economic opportunity.
<p>"Despite laws enacted by the federal government to bar their entry" and other hardships, "immigrants made homes here in New York City, and they helped to make New York City".</wordzilla:extended>

Pope Praises US History of Helping Immigrants

      <wordzilla:destination>https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/jul/03/pope-leo-lampedusa-visit-us-250th-anniversary-trump</wordzilla:destination>

Pope Leo has used his first major address to his home country to praise the US history of welcoming migrants, urging Americans to live up to the ideals put forward in the Declaration of Independence.

<wordzilla:extended>In his latest implicit rebuke to Donald Trump, the first US leader of the Roman Catholic church said the word "America" had become a "byword for freedom" across the world because of the way the country welcomed migrants.
<p>In a speech given live from the Vatican to the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia as he received the Center's Liberty Medal, Leo said he hoped that ideals of "unity, justice and peace" held by the founding fathers would guide the US as it celebrated its 250th anniversary.
<p>"This historic anniversary presents us with the opportunity to reflect once again on the nation's founding principles in the hope that America will remain ever true to the dream that has earned it the title of land of the free and home of the brave," the pope said.</wordzilla:extended>

Guess Who Really Wrote a Book About Negotiating ...

      <wordzilla:destination>https://journals.ysu.am/bulletin-ysu-int-rel-pol/article/view/13465/10990</wordzilla:destination>

Iran's foreign minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, who believes: "The Iranian negotiation style is generally known in the world as the market style,' which means continuous and tireless bargaining. This method is a process of interaction that requires great patience and time. It requires a lot of time and energy, and he who gets tired and bored quickly will lose. The market has its own unique culture, and only a person who has lived in that culture for years or, as a person connected to the market says, has breathed the air of the market', can participate and compete in it."

<wordzilla:extended>"The main principle of bargaining is practice: repetition, repetition, and repetition"combined with steadfastness and persistence. Insisting on positions and repeating demands is a necessity that must be done each time with different rhetoric and reasoning."</wordzilla:extended>

Trump Declares Victory Over ... "Criminally Made Algae"

      <wordzilla:destination>https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/116829203090822692</wordzilla:destination>

I just returned from a tour of various Statues, Monuments, Fountains and, most importantly, an old and run down Golf Course located throughout Washington, D.C., our Nation's Capital. Almost all of the Statues, Monuments, and Fountains have been completely renovated and restored, and are in, after suffering years of Graffiti, Abuse, and Vandalism, perfect shape. They are truly beautiful, even nicer than the day they were built. The Reflecting Pool is now in full use after suffering great damage from Criminal, Radical Left Vandals, people that truly hate our Country. They cut the lower surface of a very expensive and strong waterproof padding, in the color of American Flag Blue, and put their hands underneath the surface, and ripped it.

<wordzilla:extended>... Likewise, they cut and butchered a 350 foot long strip, with many 1 and 2 foot individual cuts, creating great damage to this beautiful piece of art that was, last week, 100% free of leaks, and any of the other problems it has had since its building in 1922. It never worked properly until last week and, right after July 4th, when we will drain the water to treat the damage caused by these "animals," it will again be in perfect shape. In the meantime, it is working well, the criminally made algae is gone, and the grass, which was destroyed, is being replaced shortly ...</wordzilla:extended>

The Battle of Little Bighorn on June 25 and 26, 1876, lasted barely a full day, but it would become one of the most famous, controversial and mysterious military engagements in American history. Pitting the United States Army against Native warriors, primarily Lakota Sioux and Northern Cheyenne, the battle also brought together three men who remain legends 150 years later: on one side, Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer, in command of the Army's Seventh Cavalry Regiment, and on the other, the Lakota chief and holy man Sitting Bull and the Lakota leader Crazy Horse.

Trump's War: Bigger Global Turning Point Than Vietnam?

      <wordzilla:destination>https://www.theguardian.com/world/ng-interactive/2026/may/31/donald-trump-iran-excursion-vietnam-war</wordzilla:destination>

Patrick Wintour, The Guardian: The far shorter Middle East war has rapidly revealed the strategic weakness of US firepower in an interconnected world. In scale, of course, the current conflict does not match the Vietnam war, which went on for years, led to the deaths of 58,220 US soldiers, and is often perceived as the totemic and unmatchable example of US hubris. By comparison with the Vietnam odyssey, Iran feels more like a day trip. But in terms of consequence, it is still possible that the "excursion" will prove to be the bigger geopolitical turning point for the unrivalled superpower, the moment when the US will have to concede it mishandled a war not just because it had no convincing battle plan, but also no grand strategy to match how the contemporary world works. In an interconnected world, Trump believes progress is achieved through conflict, not cooperation.

<wordzilla:extended>Trump's "little excursion to Iran", judging by the drafts of the potential peace agreements that are circulating, is being universally perceived as a defeat. Almost regardless of the outcome -- most likely a return to the old status quo -- the war looks ill-conceived, a monument to confused objectives, bad planning and misplaced assumptions.</wordzilla:extended>
