Upon its release, "Like a Rolling Stone" quickly stood out given its unusually long length of 6:13. In those days, songs played on the radio were usually around three minutes long, as the New York Times noted in 2004.

For its rankings of the 500 greatest songs ever in 2004, Rolling Stone ranked "Like a Rolling Stone" No. 1.

It maintained the top spot for the updated rankings in 2010, though Rolling Stone most recently listed it as the fourth-best song ever in 2024.
