<wordzilla:destination>https://abc7.la/emB7ow</wordzilla:destination>

Typhus is a bacterial disease spread by infected fleas. Symptoms range from mild to potentially deadly. Health officials say it's so widespread, you can be at risk whether you have a pet or not. "These cases have been rising year after year. They're occurring in all areas of our county," said Medical Epidemiologist Dr. Aiman Halai with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. In 2025, 220 typhus infections were recorded in L.A. County, which is up from 187 cases in 2024. Halai said 90% of residents bitten by contaminated fleas ended up in the hospital.

Road of good intentions & social engineering leads 2 failure

      <wordzilla:destination>https://t.co/8iftv0qxCY</wordzilla:destination>

Los Angeles has spent more than $300 million on Inside Safe since Bass launched the program in December 2022, clearing scores of homeless encampments and moving about 5,800 people into interim housing " mostly hotels and motels. The goal was to get each of those people into permanent housing, typically taxpayer-funded apartments. But even as the mayor's initiative brings more people indoors, a growing number are winding up back on the street. The longer the program exists, the greater the share of participants who have returned to "unsheltered" homelessness, according to monthly dashboards which were posted by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, or LAHSA, and analyzed by The Times.

<wordzilla:extended>This is a great example of a Snoofy type of oversimplification of social engineering. Just get them short term housing ... Well the housing has to have rules, and the rules make people leave. Without looking at the data or the cases of why its not working, LA says they just need more money to make it work. Homelessness is a complex problem, the answer is never one size fits all solution.</wordzilla:extended>

WASHINGTON " Lawyers for Rep. Eric Swalwell demanded Monday that FBI Director Kash Patel immediately end any effort to release records from a decade-old investigation involving the California Democrat and a suspected Chinese operative that resulted in no criminal charges. The cease-and-desist letter from the attorneys advises Patel that he would run afoul of both federal law and longstanding Justice Department policy if he moves forward with releasing records from the FBI's investigative file. It seeks a response from Patel within three days confirming that he will comply with the demand, and warns that any further effort to publicize the files will result in legal action.

The Ozark Police Department said Officer Dylan Griffin with the Crime Suppression Unit pulled over 61-year-old Learndis Hamilton on January 9 for a traffic violation. Containers of clear liquid were reportedly visible inside the vehicle, prompting further investigation.

LA PLATA, Md. - A professional cornhole player with no arms and legs has been accused of murder in La Plata. What we know: Dayton James Webber, 27, of La Plata is accused of shooting and killing Bradrick Michael Wells, 27, of Waldorf during an argument. Police say Webber was in his Tesla SUV when he shot Wells in the passenger seat. He then pulled over and asked two backseat passengers to help pull Wells out of the car. They refused and got out of the car before calling the police. Webber then fled the scene with Wells still in the car.

Between hearings for deposed Venezuelan President Nicols Maduro and accused CEO shooter Luigi Mangione, the U.S. federal court in Manhattan was recently asked to consider an important question: When is salsa too spicy? The precipitating event was a 2024 trip to a Times Square taqueria by a German tourist. The plaintiff, Faycal Manz, said he suffered "severe physical symptoms" following a single bite of Los Tacos No. 1's green salsa, and sued for damages.

He started by mentioning a presentation on the impact of organized retail theft he'd heard in a public safety committee the day before. "There was a presentation of a group seeking to change how we address organized retail theft," he said. "And it actually had not occurred to me to ask, it probably would have been good, to make sure that they would study the benefit of shoplifting and of retail theft. Because perhaps people are relying on that and using that, and maybe it's assisting them in some way."

Los Angeles County supervisors voted Tuesday to pursue legal options challenging a new federal rule that would prevent lawful permanent residents " green card holders " from obtaining Small Business Administration-backed loans. The Board of Supervisors approved a motion directing the county's legal staff to explore litigation after the SBA announced the policy change. Under the SBA policy change, businesses seeking SBA-backed loans must be 100 percent owned by U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals, which means businesses owned by lawful permanent residents are no longer eligible

<wordzilla:extended>Wild, never knew I could have gotten an SBA loan before. This seems unreasonable, any fool should be able to get a loan and fail and have the US back it up.</wordzilla:extended>
