More Connecticut high school pitchers are hitting 90 mph

It wasn't that long ago, if a high school baseball pitcher reached the mid-80s with his fastball, he would be considered elite. But the number that draws the attention of scouts and college recruiters on radar guns has risen steadily.

"What we found back in 2021 was that the baseline metric that would result in Division I opportunities was the 90 mph fastball," said Dan Guttenplan of the New England Baseball Journal, who began keeping track of the number of high school baseball pitchers in the region who could throw 90 miles per hour or harder five years ago. "Once you got to that mark, you were more of a credible prospect for D-I programs."

That's not the case anymore, according to Guttenplan, and Prep Baseball Report's New England Scouting Director Brendan Ebert.

"The way I see it is that 86 mph used to be the benchmark for higher-end high school players," Ebert said. "But now that has changed to 90 mph, (and) 95 mph is the old 90 mph." ...
