Government shutdown expected after Senate fails to pass bill

A partial government shutdown is expected at midnight as the Senate failed to reach an agreement on a funding package, according to senators and aides in each party. Earlier Friday, the House approved the bill by a vote of 286-134, with 112 Republicans and 22 Democrats voting against it.

While final passage is not expected until the early hours of Saturday morning, the Senate action is expected to effectively prevent any lapse in funding or government functions.
