Two separate demonstrations protesting the deaths of two men during police action in Montreal resulted in six arrests. More than 100 Montrealers protested the death of 29-year-old Abisay Cruz, who died during a police operation. Police say six people were arrested on assault charges. Another group protested a separate police shooting that resulted in a man's death. According to independent provincial investigators, the victim was allegedly in possession of a firearm when officers shot in his direction. Demonstrators demanded more transparency and accountability and there were no arrests. In 2023, police shot at 85 people in Canada, 41 fatally. In Canada, police shootings are investigated by either an independent board or a different agency, depending on the province. By contrast, US police killed more than 1,300 people in 2023.
