My Dad was a NYC fireman.

I remember one day he came home from work. (1960's or so)

He said that he was at a fire that afternoon. As they (he and his fellow firemen) were fighting to put out the fire, they were pelleted by stones thrown by the neighborhood people.

I did not understand that back then, and I still do not understand it.

... At least two people are dead after someone shot at firefighters in an "ambush-style" attack in Kootenai County Sunday afternoon, officials said.

Pat Riley, Northern Lakes fire chief, said it quickly turned into an "ambush-style active shooter," and one of his personnel had to be pulled out and taken to the nearest fire station.

The two people confirmed killed in the ambush were likely firefighters, Norris said.

Other casualties were reported, but Norris said it's unclear how many. It's also unclear if there is one suspect or multiple, he said. When firefighters reported the shots, they said they felt them coming from different directions. ...

My Dad came home from work one evening. And something was odd to me. He walked in the front door, and went right into his bedroom, sat on the bed, where he stayed for a while.

I asked my Mom, what was happening.

After a while, she finally told me ...

My Dad was carrying a baby out of a fire.

But as he was carrying that baby out of the fire to the ambulance, the baby died in his arms.

The toll on the first responders is, imo, underestimated.
