German counterintelligence agents rendered a Russian terrorist ring ineffective. Three Ukrainian nationals were plotting parcel bomb attacks on cargo planes in Germany on behalf of Russia. Vladyslav T, Daniil B, and Yevhen B, were detained in Germany and Switzerland, accused of "secret agent activity for sabotage purposes." Germany is the second-largest national supplier of military aid to Ukraine after the US and has pledged unwavering support of Kiev. Richard Moore, the head of MI6, warned in Nov 2024 that the Kremlin was waging a "staggeringly reckless campaign" of sabotage in Europe while also increasing its nuclear saber-rattling to scare off other countries from backing Ukraine.
The explosive devices were rigged to ignite in mid-air using pre-set timers repurposed from inexpensive Chinese electronics typically used for tracking lost items. Their impact was intensified by tubes disguised as cosmetics, which were filled with a flammable gel containing compounds such as nitromethane. In July 2024, European security agencies were shaken by three separate explosions in packages sent from Lithuania, which detonated in Birmingham, UK; Leipzig, Germany; and near Warsaw, Poland.
