Naved Durrni (34) was charged with assault in the first degree as a hate crime and other charges for allegedly repeatedly and ferociously punching and kicking a 55-year-old Muslim woman aboard a subway. The defendant asked a woman, who was wearing a head covering, if she was a Muslim and proceeded to attack her. Durrni allegedly slapped and punched her on the face multiple times then kicked the woman in the face with his heavy work boots before fleeing the scene. The defendant was apprehended by police several blocks away from the attack. The woman suffered a fracture to her nasal bone, a fracture to her orbital bone as well as substantial pain, bruising, and swelling and was treated at a local hospital. If convicted, the defendant faces up to 25 years in prison. Criminal complaints and indictments are accusations. A defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Islamophobic and xenophobic attacks are on the rise in the US. Last year a woman deployed tear gas on an innocent Muslim taxi driver in NYC. This is the result of years of vilifying Muslims and Arabs in the western media, which make up only 1.3% of the US population, as well as Trumpf's white supremacist MAGA messaging. Republican Randy Fine in Florida called for his Muslim colleagues in Congress to be deported. AIPAC is delighted with the fruits of their labors. Naved Durrni was previously convicted of aggravated harassment for attacking several Muslims in June 2021. Link: Hate Crimes>
