The payments, which apparently average about $30 due to the number of claimants who qualified, is for the Facebook allowing third party entities to access personal data of users, the most famous being Cambridge Analytica.
It's interesting to see Meta's PR take the position of: "We simply make the device and what's done on them is not our responsibility." Anyone who designs and builds technologies should be aware of its potential use cases and its potential abuses.
