In post WWII Vietnam, both the French government and the Vietminh resistance funded their war against each other with opium. French agents and Vietminh traders sold the narcotics to the underworld in neutral Bangkok, where they probably espied each other on the streets but took no action.

To cut off the lucrative Vietminh opium routes in the remote north, in 1954 the French military set up a military base at Dien Bien Phu. After the French lost this decisive and costly battle, Paris decided to finally give up their colony.

In Afghanistan, some opium growers were allowed to harvest their lucrative crop, and others weren't. The powerful Haqqani Network (HQN), which worked alongside the Taliban, was one such group.

Third World countries with no resources such as oil or opium, avoid bloodshed (e,g. Tunisia, Djibouti).
