D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser has ordered what she called "extraordinary measures," including an immediate hiring freeze and a plan to furlough city employees and close government facilities, after House lawmakers failed to take up legislation that would fix a $1.1 billion hole in the District's budget before leaving on a two-week recess. The stunning circumstances " a slate of cost-cutting measures because of a budget crisis for D.C. caused by Congress " could lead to financial turmoil for an untold number of District residents who could be furloughed from city government jobs and, depending on which facilities city officials close, create gaps in services citywide for an unknown amount of time.
In her seven-page order Tuesday, Bowser (D) said while officials still hope the House will pass the D.C. budget fix later this month, the city could no longer wait to plan for the possibility of drastic cuts or hold up its 2026 budget process.
"Given the magnitude of the current budget shortfall caused by Congress," Bowser said " and the fact that D.C. would have to confront the $1.1. billion impact to its 2025 budget before moving onto the 2026 budget, she added " "extraordinary actions must be taken now."
The people of Washington DC will pay more for municipal services (licenses, certificates, construction permits, etc). Parking rates will go up as will fines and quotas will be raised for MPD officers to write traffic tickets. These are all problems the oligarchs are completely immune to.
