China shrugs off threat of US tariffs to economy

China's leaders are downplaying the potential impact from U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war, saying they have the capacity to protect jobs and limit damage from higher tariffs on Chinese exports. The briefing Monday by several senior officials of different government ministries appeared aimed at shoring up confidence with promises of support for companies and the unemployed, easier lending conditions and other policies to counter the impact of combined tariffs of up to 145% on U.S. imports from China. It followed a meeting of China's powerful Politburo last week that analysts said had focused on ways to counter keep growth on track despite slowing exports. "Chinese policymakers are on heightened standby mode," Louise Loo, lead economist at Oxford Economics said in a a report. She noted that the policies were similar to earlier pronouncements.

Comments

As I have mentioned in my prior comments ...

China has a different time frame view than Pres Trump.

Pres Trump is more along the lines of ...

What benefits me here, now. Totally transactional.

While China seems to be more of a view ...

Let's look at the long term ramifications of a surrender to Pres Trump. Do we want him to control our economy?

I have not a clue how this stand-off will end.

But one thing I do note is a question ...

Why is Pres Trump saying that China is calling for a solution when it may be Pres trump calling China?

China is lying as per usual. It's an acceptable part of their culture.

In reality, they have a large population of people to feed, and they need us more than we need them. When those people get tired and hangry, the ---- will hit the fan for Xi.

China shrugs off or the CCP shrugs off? Seems to be the CCP - the same party that had no issue killing off 55M through starvation in their past. And, they are well on the way to doing this again. Chinese factories are shuttered - they have now pissed off Europe by exposing European luxury brands (Europe's only real economy at this point beyond tourism) which are passing anti-dumping laws, and unemployment is massive. Once this 20+ millions jobs reliant on US exports disappear (most have already), we may get Tiananmen 2.0.
