France plans to build a brand new high-security prison in the Amazon rainforest near the site of the notorious Devil's Island penal colony in Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, French Guiana. Bordering Suriname, the new Bastille will cost French taxpayers a total 400 million euros ($451 million) and will also house a court. This jungle dungeon would incarcerate drug kingpins and radical Islamists, including 60 maximum-security prisoners. How much de-forestation to build this 500-inmate gulag in not clear. Map: Link One
