In August, 35,697 US properties were foreclosed, undergoing default notices, scheduled auctions, or bank repossessions. This is down 1% from a month ago but up 18% from a year ago. "The ongoing rise in both foreclosure starts and completions suggests that some homeowners may be experiencing added financial strain in the current high-cost and high-interest-rate environment." Nationwide, one in every 3,987 housing units had a foreclosure filing in August 2025. States with the worst foreclosure rates were Nevada, South Carolina, and Florida. Texas, Florida, and California led the nation in foreclosure starts. Lenders started the foreclosure process on 24,254 US properties in Aug 2025, down slightly at 0.2% from last month but up 16.9% from a year ago.
Hardworking lower- and middle-income Americans, some working two jobs, are taking it on the chin under the Trumpf junta. More people are borrowing money just to pay grocery bills, rent, and utilities. Americans owe $220 billion in medical debts; 78% owe more than $10,000 and 500,000 of them file for bankruptcy every year because of medical bills. The Department of Education is restarted collecting college loan defaults, further tightening household budgets with food prices reaching their highest point in three years. California, Oregon, and New York lead the US in homelessness and after the effects of the Republican "Big Beautiful Bill" take effect next year, we can expect more medical bankruptcies, home foreclosures, and homeless people. The biggest winners will be the banks and real estate developers buying up properties at low costs.
