Denmark's Greenland dilemma: Defending a territory

When U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio meets his Danish and Greenlandic counterparts next week, Denmark will be defending a territory that has been moving steadily away from it and towards independence since 1979.

More from the article ...

... President Donald Trump's threats to seize Greenland have triggered a wave of European solidarity with Denmark.

But the crisis has exposed an uncomfortable reality -- Denmark is rallying support to protect a territory whose population wants independence, and whose largest opposition party now wants to bypass Copenhagen and negotiate directly with Washington. ...

"Denmark risks exhausting its foreign policy capital to secure Greenland, only to watch it walk away afterwards," said Mikkel Vedby Rasmussen, a political science professor at University of Copenhagen.

STRATEGIC RELEVANCE

Denmark cannot let Greenland go without losing its geopolitical relevance in the Arctic territory, strategically located between Europe and North America and a critical site for the U.S. ballistic missile defence system. ...

OK, maybe the people of Greenland want independence.

Kudos to them, btw.

Next, let's do Guam, US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, etc., etc...

But I have to ask, is there desire to be subservient to Pres Trump's whims and exploitation?

Asked differently, as I have heard, the people of Crimea did not like being a part of Ukraine. But they apparently did not want to be under Pres Putin's rule, either.

Fact of the matter is, Trump won't be president for long (relatively speaking). He will die or won't run for a third term. I'm not saying the Dem candidate will automatically be elected, but when there is a Dem candidate that wins the POTUS election, they will hand Greenland back to Denmark if only to undermine Trump's ridiculous foreign policy reasoning in this instance.

Vaguely reminds me of Puerto Rico wanting to become a State, but the GOP preventing it from happening because Puerto Rico might be a blue state or its residents have the wrong skin color.

Yet, speaking of US security ...

Puerto Rico's forgotten military bases become crucial in Trump's plan for American dominance'
www.nbcnews.com

... One day after the United States attacked Venezuela and captured its ruler, Nicols Maduro, beachgoers on the northwestern coast of Puerto Rico heard the rumbling noises of flying military aircraft overtake the peaceful sounds of waves lapping onto the shore.

For those in this city known for its surfing and beach life, the sights and roars of fighter jets and Reaper drones were a reminder that, just a few miles away, the air facilities of a once-shuttered U.S. military base have gained renewed importance in President Donald Trump's plan to assert "American dominance in the Western Hemisphere." ...

So, maybe, instead of trying to annex Canada or Greenland as the next State...

Maybe Pres Trump should acknowledge the wants of the people of Puerto Rico, and also help the security of the US. ...

Jus' sayin'

Don't resist the American landing and then wage a campaign of sabotage and guerilla war.
