Quantum Teleportation Survives Thru Busy Internet Cables

An experiment showing that quantum and classical communication can be carried out through the same fibre at the same time may open the door to building a quantum internet with existing infrastructure. 20 December 2024

To build a quantum internet, we thought we'd need a huge amount of new cables to carry fragile signals - but a new experiment shows quantum teleportation can survive in busy internet cables www.newscientist.com/article/2461 ...

OK, so the thread link has a paywall now, so here's the BBC...

Pretty cool stuff. I got to the Silicon Valley in the early 80's and saw lots of new tech, but this is impressive.

From the link ...

... Quantum teleportation could provide near-instant communication over long distances.

But, inside Internet cables, photons needed for teleportation are lost within the millions of light particles required for classical communications.

A new study quantified light scattering to find exact areas to place photons to keep them safe from other particles. The approach successfully worked in experiments carrying regular Internet traffic. ...

Whoa, "exact areas to place photons?" They are diddling with where photons hide?

imo, this is way cool. And underappreciated.

If this pans out, it could change things..

Significantly

so, it's just faster?

only one aspect is faster at this time, and it's not "faster" it is instantaneous. All the beforehand set up and staging is considerable.
