US-sanctioned pro-Kremlin Ukrainian politician Andriy Portnov (51) was rendered ineffective in Spain. Assailants shot Portnov as he was getting into a car before escaping into a wooded area. Several rounds struck the quisling in the head and in the back. The operation took place outside The American School of Madrid, located in an affluent suburb just west of the capital. Portnov was sanctioned by the US in 2021 for corruption and bribery under the Magnitsky Act and the Security Service of Ukraine previously investigated his possible involvement in Russia's annexation of Crimea. The case was later closed and Ukraine itself never imposed sanctions on Portnov.
