AI Wants to Sell You Stuff While the World Burns

Meta is betting on generative AI for a new generation of aggressive advertising. It requires immense energy, much of which will likely come from fossil fuels.

Comments

"It hurts to see bad people win, but Meta, the company that burned billions trying to make the metaverse a thing, remains eye-wateringly profitable, thanks almost entirely to its advertising business, which accounted for 98 percent of its total revenue in the second quarter of 2025.

And soon, if Meta executives have their way, that advertising will be powered by so-called artificial intelligence"and shocking quantities of fossil fuels"all so they can convince you to buy more stuff."

Buy more stuff with what money?

Perpetual growth is never going to be possible, no matter the format. More ads don't mean more stuff sold or bought, especially when they're hellbent on making sure as few people as possible have money to actually spend.

There's almost nothing advertised on facebook that

A - isn't a scam

B - can't be found elsewhere for cheaper.
