Rory McIlroy Must Not Be a NASCAR Fan

While casting doubt on the idea that the PGA and LIV will ever unify as one tour because of the latter's "irrational" spending, Rory McIlroy lamented other divisive fractures in sports and said, "You look at boxing for example, or you look at what's happened in motor racing in the United States with Indy and NASCAR and everything else, I think for golf in general it would be better if there was unification." IndyCar and NASCAR?

Neither of which is as easy as they look.

I drove through 19 states two years ago, and can say that the worst drivers were in South Carolina; they all thought they were Cale Yarborough or Dale Earnhardt.

Even the ones in trucks.. especially the ones in trucks.

And I fondly remember summer golf in New England in the 80's; my daughter was in elementary school, loved to drive the cart, and could hit the ball straighter than I could... not far, but straight.

Pro golf has gotten pretty goofy, though now.

As I said, it's controversial. In some circles, snooker is considered a sport.

Golf is a recognized Olympic sport. So is curling, which is really silly. Is a race car driver an athlete?

I have no idea. Rifle and pistol shooting are also Olympic sports... don't have to spend a lot of time in the gym for that.

There's a big lobby pushing to make fishing an Olympic sport.

Golf is a great sport, especially on public municipal courses where you don't have to put up with obnoxious rich dudes in their matchy matchy adult Garanimals.

The idea that NASCAR and IndyCar should be a single sport is pretty funny. Their styles of racing have nothing in common except being on four wheels.
