State Supreme Court Overturns Abortion Ban in MAGA Heartland

In June 2022, in its ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark case that for decades guaranteed abortion rights across the country. The ruling allowed states to craft their own laws surrounding abortion. Several Republican-led states quickly moved to ban the practice, and abortion bans remain in place in about a dozen states.

Tuesday's ruling means abortion will remain legal in Wyoming, a victory for reproductive-rights advocates.

What To Know

Wyoming's Supreme Court on Tuesday struck down two laws implementing abortion bans. It found that the bans were counter to the state Constitution, which was amended in 2012 to protect the rights of individuals to make their own health care decisions.

"A woman has a fundamental right to make her own health care decisions, including the decision to have an abortion," the ruling says. ...
