Heckel is a defensive 'luxury' for UConn women's basketball

Kayleigh Heckel dove onto the floor and grabbed hold of the ball. It didn't matter that UTSA's Cheyenne Rowe didn't let go after Heckel's pounce. Heckel didn't have plans to either.

... The two wrestled on the ground until Heckel was able to maneuver herself in front of Rowe and rip the ball out of her grip, causing the Roadrunners' 13th turnover of Saturday's first-round matchup with UConn women's basketball.

With starting point guard KK Arnold on the bench in early foul trouble, Heckel stepped up and shined in the No. 1 overall seeded Huskies' 90-52 win over UTSA. Sure, her playmaking helped stabilize UConn's offense, but it was her relentless, aggressive defense that stole the show thanks to hustle plays, like her forced turnover on Rowe.

"She's just so fast. She anticipates stuff so well that she's able to get those steals," said guard Ashlynn Shade. "She's a great on-ball defender, keeping those quick guards in front of her. ... I think just her overall intensity when she comes into the game, you know you can look forward to her really just stepping up and being that defensive pressure." ...
