Alen Zheng was indicted after he reportedly fled to China. If convicted, he faces a minimum penalty of 5 years, up to 40 years, in federal prison.

His sister, Ann Mary Zheng, faces 30 years if found guilty of witness tampering and being an accessory after the fact to the crime.

The motive behind the Zhengs' actions remains unknown and their mother has been detained by ICE pending deportation for overstaying her visa.

An indictment is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed one or more violations of federal criminal law, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty.
