Film Curmudgeon Rex Reed Dies

Rex Taylor Reed, the legendary film critic whose sharp wit, uncompromising taste and distinctive prose made him one of the most recognizable voices in American cultural journalism for six decades, died in his sleep on May 12, 2026, in New York City. He was 87.

Born in Ft Worth, grew up in Louisiana, and went to LSU.

"My mother came from a family of 10 in Oklahoma, her second cousins were the Dalton Gang. And when my grandfather was a little boy, he was rocked by Jesse James on his knee."

"Reed was openly gay. In 2018, he stated, "Love is not something that I've been really good at. I think people are intimidated by people with opinions. How do you go start looking for a wife or a boyfriend or a significant other? It's too late.

It would be nice, though, to find somebody who's really handy with a wheelchair, because that day is coming.".

He was the bad boy journalist who panned an older Frank Sinatra in the '70's. Among other famous, and not always deserved take-downs.

He's probably negatively critiquing God's tired old schtick at this very moment.
