IDF Confirms: Israel Strikes Back at Iran

Israel struck back at Iran early Saturday, delivering a much-threatened response for this month's 180-missile attack by Tehran and further expanding the hostilities that have spiraled out of the war in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had vowed a forceful response to Iran's ballistic-missile attack on the country. The missiles launched by Iran in early October caused minor damage, according to Israeli officials, but in some places penetrated Israel's air defenses. The Biden administration had said Israel has the right to strike back but urged it to refrain from attacking Iran's nuclear and oil facilities, an escalation that could spark a regional war and raise oil prices. Iran said its missile attack was retaliation for the deaths of the leaders of its allied militias Hezbollah and Hamas and a top Iranian general.

Another view...

Israeli military says it is conducting precise strikes on military targets in Iran
www.reuters.com

... The Israeli military said early on Saturday it is conducting "precise strikes" on military targets in Iran in response to what it called "the continuous attacks from the regime in Iran against Israel". ...

That is 25 minutes old as I post this comment.

Keep in mind that early info may not be correct.

A largely symbolic attack. Iran's last missile barrage has changed the balance of power in the ME and Israel now cannot act without full US support.

Israel says retaliatory strikes against Iran 'completed'
www.dw.com

... The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out strikes against military targets in Iran early Saturday morning.

The Israeli military then said it has ended its retaliation on Iran about three hours after it first announced the news. It also warned Iran against further escalation.

The IDF said the strikes were in response to "months of continuous attacks from Iran." Israel had long vowed to respond to Iran's missile attack on its territory on October 1.

The Iranian assault followed the killing of the leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, in late September in Lebanon.

It also followed the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed by an explosion in Tehran in July that Iranian officials blamed on Israel. ...

imho, still early information ....

A largely symbolic attack.
Yes. Other than for those two dead Iranian soldiers.

Iran's last missile barrage has changed the balance of power in the ME
How so? Seems that Iran's attack was also symbolic, although unintentionally so, other than for that Palestinian Iran killed ("Gazan buried as only known victim of Iranian barrage against Israel"
www.reuters.com) much to everyone's amusement.

And that's why Israel no longer exists, Palestinians have their homeland (much to the chagrin of Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon), Sinwar and Nasrallah popped back above ground bereft of their 72 virgins, and 50,000 Palestinians were resurrected.

and Israel now cannot act without full US support.

Yep. And that's why Iran is ... doing what, exactly?

"A largely symbolic attack.
Yes. Other than for those two dead Iranian soldiers."

As of now, it seems more likely this was a result of air defense launch error rather than being hit by Israel.

"How so? Seems that Iran's attack was also symbolic"

Well, it was symbolic as it was not meant to kill. It was meant to show that Israeli's Iron Dome is useless against Iran. This constrains Israel's reaction and this latest attack shows that.

"Yep. And that's why Iran is ... doing what, exactly?

We have 3 possible explanations for why Israel's attack did so little:
1.) It was not meant to as they are afraid of Iranian response
2.) The US did not allow F35s to enter Iranian airspace (all indictions are that Israel used air launched missile from a 100+ km out from the Iranian border) and never had a manned aircraft cross the border.
3.) The attack was intercepted and repelled by Iran

There is no other option after Israel bragged about their 'huge' response. They failed militarily and in PR.

@Deadman

So, bluster on all sides, except Israel is continuing to slaughter Hamas and Hezbollah. Which is the entire reason that Iran launched the missile strike.

Israel has already gone through the HizzBawlzOff's leaders and is now taking out middle management and terrorist interns making photocopies.

Wow! Iran really showed Israel who's boss.

"So, bluster on all sides, except Israel is continuing to slaughter Hamas and Hezbollah. Which is the entire reason that Iran launched the missile strike."

Israel is already calling it quits in Lebanon. They said they would be out within 2 weeks after being stopped at the border. Of course, they will still bomb women and children in civilian areas and the Iranians will allow this to continue because it is great for PR value for them.

"Israel has already gone through the HizzBawlzOff's leaders and is now taking out middle management and terrorist interns making photocopies."

Which shows how ridiculous and overconfident they were. A competent military would have waited to blow up the pagers until the ground war was already started as that would actually give a tactical advantage. Instead, they waited and now they are getting murked by ATGMs and they are pulling out after accomplishing nothing.

Reports are now that Israel didn't come within 100 km of the Iranian border, so yeah, Iran likely scared them off. The most likely explanation making the rounds now is that the Israeli early drone attack which was supposed to make Iran turn on the radar and thus give away their locations for the follow on attack targeting AD systems did not work as Iran did not take the bait and shot down the drones with more conventional AD systems. Thus, Israel and the US could not risk a bunch of F35s being shot down and Israel called off the attack before accomplishing anything. Basically, it was more or less a free airshow for Iraqis.

@DeadMan

Great! Sounds like Iran got everything it wanted. I imagine Ayatollah Ashahollah has come out of hiding since Israel is no longer to be feared. ("Iran's Supreme Leader 'in hiding' as 200 missiles fired at Israel in chilling warning" www.msn.com)

"Iran's supreme leader says Israel's attack 'should not be exaggerated nor downplayed,' without calling for retaliation"
abcnews.go.com

Seems like Iran is more reluctant to risk Iranian lives than Palestinian lives. Shocking how Iran can engage in strategic thinking like that when it's their own skin in the game, unlike when it ordered Palestinian Isis to rape and murder 1,400 Israeli civilian men, women, and children.

In other news, oh no!
Iran's Supreme Leader believed to be seriously ill and may only have months to live'

Tots and pears!

Latest info is that Israel did not come within 250km of the Iranian border and just released some air launch cruise missiles and did a u-turn because they were all intercepted and Iran didn't even have the light up the S300/400 system so they could not expose the F35s.

In 20/20 hindsight, Israel should have promoted their Iraqi "airshow" better and charged $5 per ticket. Hell, they could have put up some old F14s even. Would have saved them face vs. this epic fail.
