The missiles launched by Iran in early October caused minor damage, according to Israeli officials, but in some places penetrated Israel's air defenses. The Biden administration had said Israel has the right to strike back but urged it to refrain from attacking Iran's nuclear and oil facilities, an escalation that could spark a regional war and raise oil prices. Iran said its missile attack was retaliation for the deaths of the leaders of its allied militias Hezbollah and Hamas and a top Iranian general.
