Trump Commutes Sentences of Proud Boys, Oath Keepers Heads

President Donald Trump on Monday pardoned more than 1,000 people charged in the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, and commuted the sentences of leaders of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers.

More

On the campaign trail, Trump regularly featured the stories of Jan. 6 defendants he labeled "hostages" and "patriots."

"Also included among the 14 individuals whose sentences were commuted by Trump on Monday is Kelly Meggs, an Oath Keeper member and the leader of the Florida contingent of the group who was sentenced to a decade in prison for the seditious conspiracy conviction.

Clemency was also granted to Thomas Caldwell, who was not a member of the Oath Keepers, but led the effort to organize the quick reaction force so that the far-right group could quickly transport firearms into DC on January 6 should they decide it was necessary.

Oath Keepers member Jessica Watkins, who had been serving a nearly nine-year prison sentence for conspiring to obstruct an official proceeding and other felony charges, also had her sentence commuted by Trump."

Trump pardoned his seditious co-conspirators, convicted by Juries all over the country, who attacked the Police.

So much for the Law and Order Party. If you are a Trump Loyalist, you can conspire to sedition and attack Police in America and get away with it now.

Thanks yet again, Trumpism!

So the Brownshirts will be ready for the call-up.

I really don't care if he pardoned the ones who were non-violent, like he said he was going to do, but showing any mercy to the ones who attacked police with flagpoles and fire extinguishers? ------- indefensible. And pathetic.

What about them? Sometimes it's justified, sometimes not. Just like I've been telling the BLM supporters for years.

These criminals are the base he'll recruit his first brown shirts from.

They are his militias, now.
This was a long insurrection and coup, but now it's complete.

If hey had received a fair trial by an impartial jury you may have a leg to stand on.

#12 | Posted by lfthndthrds at 2025-01-21 08:43 AM

At least I'm consistent. I don't have any sympathy for either the violent BLM rioters or the violent J6 rioters.

#13 | Posted by sentinel at 2025-01-21 08:45 AM

I'm consistent too... Fair trial/Impartial jury.

But "evidence" has been destroyed, and many who partook in these "convictions" have received presidential pardons for "things". You know... Things we don't know about.

#14 | Posted by lfthndthrds at 2025-01-21 08:52 AM

Same thing Biden said about preemptive pardons, but Lumpers ignored that and actually defended it.

#18 - no need to prove you wrong. You'r'e a moron. Trump said he was going to do this well before Biden did anything. You're hilarious thinking that Trump needed Biden to justify any action he takes. Seriously - how stupid are you?

Are you too dumb to understand the difference between Biden saying something and wisely reversing course with his son and the all the Republicans saying "don't you do that!" to Trump on pardoning insurrectionists?

You'd have nothing if not for false equivalences.

"Federal prisoners convicted in the Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021, began to be released overnight, after President Donald Trump approved pardons Monday for nearly 1,600 people charged in the riot.

Trump also commuted the sentences for 14 defendants. That included Stewart Rhodes, the former leader of the Oath Keepers militia, who had received the second-longest sentence of 18 years for his role in the riot.

Rhodes left a federal prison in Cumberland, Maryland, early Tuesday.

Relatives of Enrique Tarrio, former leader of the Proud Boys who received the longest sentence of 22 years for seditious conspiracy, said they expected his release."

'

About 600 people were charged with assaulting, resisting or impeding law enforcement. Among those who pleaded guilty, 172 admitted assaulting law enforcement, 130 admitted obstructing law enforcement during a riot and 69 admitted assaulting law enforcement with a dangerous or deadly weapon.

"I have been betrayed by my country," Michael Fanone, a former officer with Washington's Metropolitan Police Department who suffered a heart attack in the attack, told CNN on Monday.

"Tonight, six individuals who assaulted me as I did my job on Jan. 6, as did hundreds of other law enforcement officers, will now walk free."

With Trump, it's all about him.

No they didn't. They were told they'd spend the majority of their lives in prison is they didn't cop a plea deal for a shorter sentence. Why do you think Liz Cheney got a pardon for "nothing"? Her and all her minions are all now absolved of crimes they "didn't commit"

And I remind you that they were pardoned by someone who was declared mentally unfit to run for president, as well as stand trial for crimes he committed with classified information.

Trump put it out on the campaign trail that he'd do this and he was still voted. Biden unequivocally stated he wouldn't pardon his son and then after the election was over he not only pardoned for convicted crimes but issued a blanket pardon not only for his son, but for other family members and political allies.

Pardons for those who engaged in actual violence is inexcusable IMO. Pardons for somebody who broke a window and entered the building and didn't engage in any kind of violence or other protect damage but received a 4 year sentence anyway, justified.

It's amazing how the FBI managed to track down every person waived in by capitol police, who then wandered around for 15 minutes, snapped a couple of pics and left. Then to have the DOJ come crashing down on folks like this, most of whom had no priors, like a ton of bricks. But they can't find the person who deposited a couple of pipe bombs.

"
Were the strokes that killed US Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick after the January 6 insurrection really natural? Some neurologists don't think so.

Sicknick suffered strokes that killed him, according to the medical examiner's office. However, the medical examiner, Dr. Francisco Diaz, told the Washington Post, that "all that transpired" on January 6 "played a role in his condition."

The insurrection caused him to die.

#62 | Posted by LauraMohr at 2025-01-23 02:15 PM

" played a role in his condition."

Yet he doesn't say what role it played.

#63 | Posted by BellRinger at 2025-01-23 02:18 PM

Part of what transpired was being sprayed with a chemical agent directly in the face from a few feet away by a man wearing a knit Trump hat and Trump gloves.

"When I saw him get attacked, I remember his face, ghostly pale, and in pain. I remember thinking that I had never seen anyone go pale when they got sprayed with chemical spray, and I knew he must need help," fellow Capital Police Officer Caroline Edwards said in a victim's impact statement. "I didn't get a chance to help, though, because seconds later I was sprayed."

They now seem to have have been told by Pres Trump that when they do his bidding, no matter the level of violence involved, they will not be held accountable for their actions.

Pres Trump apparently has just enabled his private militia.
