Juan Soto Signs with Mets for $765 Million

Two and a half years after turning down $440 million from the Washington Nationals, with whom he won a World Series, and six weeks after declaring "I'll be open to this and every single team" within minutes of finishing the World Series with the Yankees, Juan Soto did exactly what he'd promised, and agreed to the largest contract in baseball history: $765 million for 15 years with the New York Mets.

"Professional sports" is completely out of control, outrageous. I don't watch, don't go to games, will not go, and don't buy the ridiculously-priced merchandise.
The real irony is watching stadiums full of Trump voters paying $100-300 per ticket for NBA and NFL events while simultaneously complaining that the "Biden Economy" keeps them from putting food on their table.

That's an awful lot of money to pay to be just good enough to lose a World Series.

Yea, I gave up on sports when taxpayers started paying for a new stadiums for a teams owned by billionaires.

If it's such a good deal, they can pay their own way.

Me too! I couldn't care less about any sports. The average person can't afford to attend a game, especially with a couple of kids, these salaries are out of control all to make billionaire owners even richer. This is the largest payday in history, until the next player who thinks they are the only one who can save the team demands even more. Someone wants to be the first to get a billion-dollar package, and I'm quite sure that will be coming soon. Where does it end?

But Soto did with the Yankees, dumbass. They lost, just in case you weren't paying attention.

Soto won in 2019 with a team that had three strong starters that kept their ERAs under 4. The Yankees tried to play a stupid model-- one really good starter and a bunch of pitching fools. Gerrit Cole held up his end of the bargain but the other guys had an ERA over 10.

The Mets aren't winning a World Series with Soto because they are pursuing the same stupid model as the Yankees. They might lose one, though. Maybe 2. The might be good enough for that. Shohei Ohtani gets paid 700mil for a 50/50 season, an MVP, maybe even a CY Young, and let's not forget- the entire Japanese market buying Dodgers gear for the next dozen years.

Soto on the other hand will get paid $765 million to finish runner up in MVP voting to Ohtani, hit .300, drive 35 HR, 120 RBI (150 BBs cuz he'll get pitched around- a lot), be a liability in the outfield, and perhaps, if he ever gets a more complete team around him, lose to Ohtani in the NLCS. The Mets also might sell a few more jerseys to low income Dominicans.

The age 26 is key to baseball players. It usually is the time they get their first UFA contract. It is also the age where their skills begin the unstoppable decline.
