Jewelry thieves escape and fail in sinking rowboat

Two people were arrested after an attempted jewelry heist, leaving a car crash and capsized boat in their wake. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, authorities received reports of a man and woman breaking into a residential storage container near the Hood Canal Bridge around 8 a.m. Tuesday. It is estimated the suspects initially made off with approximately $11,000 worth of gold and jewelry. The victim of the theft told authorities the two fled the scene in an SUV with covered license plates and, in an effort to stop them, the victim threw a piece of wood at their windshield, shattering it. The JCSO and Kitsap County Sheriff's Office responded to the call and found the SUV the suspects were reportedly driving. The car was involved in a rollover collision and the two suspects had fled the crash on foot, according to JCSO.

Authorities tracked the suspects using a UAV, or unmanned aerial vehicle. They found the two in a stolen rowboat, using a piece of plywood as an oar. The incident quickly turned chaotic as the rowboat started taking on water and eventually capsized.

The suspects were then forced to swim back to shore, where they were arrested by deputies. The two were booked into the Jefferson County Jail.
