Disney Fined $10 Million for Data Collection on Kids

The Walt Disney Co. will pay a $10 million fine to settle a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit alleging it allowed personal data to be collected on kids under 13, violating federal law. The FTC said Tuesday Disney violated the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, or COPPA, which requires kid-oriented apps and websites to get parents' consent before collecting personal information of children under 13. According to the complaint, Disney failed to properly label some videos that it uploaded to YouTube as "Made for Kids."

The mislabeling allowed Disney, through YouTube, to collect personal data from children under 13 viewing child-directed videos and use that data for targeted advertising to children, the FTC said. That's because, since the videos weren't labeled as being for kids, they included targeted advertising.

There isn't a First Amendment right to tailor your speech to children under 13?

How are children supposed to learn to read?

How are children supposed to learn that Cheerios are part of a nutritious balanced breakfast?

$10 million?

So, pretty much nothing for Disney.

They'll probably fire some employees.

Winning!

How much shall we sue the Trumpy cabal for collecting personal data on all Americans including sensitive populations like children via Palantir?

$50 billion sounds about right.

Former Palantir employees and critics have voiced concerns that the company's technology could be used by authoritarian governments for mass surveillance, potentially tracking the digital activities of children and other citizens.

"the company's technology could be used by authoritarian governments for mass surveillance"

Republicans will be along soon enough to remind us there's no Right To Privacy in the Constitution.
