A Belarusian spy network being built in Europe was rendered ineffective by the counterintelligence services of the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Romania. Belarusian KGB operatives were detected by CI agents in several European countries. A former deputy head of the Moldovan intelligence service who was among them. The Czechs also expelled a Belarusian agent who was operating under the cover of a diplomat. Romania's anti-organized crime agency (DIICOT) implemented an arrest warrant for a 47-year-old suspect on treason charges. The suspect had previously held management positions within Moldova's SIS. The suspect allegedly disclosed state secrets to Belarusian intelligence officers that would likely "endanger national security." Belarus managed to create the network because its diplomats are able to freely travel across European countries, unlike Russia's diplomats and FSB operatives.
Belarus is led by Europe's longest ruling dictator, President Alexander Lukashenko, who is a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Lukashenko let Russia use Belarusian territory as a staging ground for Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and later allowed the deployment of Russian tactical nuclear missiles. The Slavic supremo did not bother changing the name of the KGB when the USSR dissolved and Belarus became independent in 1991. Like Vladimir Putin, Lukashenko uses the KGB to ruthlessly suppress his own people and liquidate political opponents. Putin using the Belarusian KGB was a clever and logical move that European CI agencies caught on to. Most Belarusians oppose the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but are powerless against Lukashenko's iron grip over the country. This tyrant attended the recent massive military parade in Beijing with his fellow authoritarians. In the event of a Russian invasion of the Baltic republics, Belarus would be key to the operation.
