Heard Ray Davies interviewed years ago, perhaps on Fresh Air.

The Kinks had just played in New York, and someone had dosed the brothers with LSD without them knowing it. They did not play a good show, and Davies spent the night wandering the streets.

He ended up in a Midtown Automat in the very early morning, thoroughly distraught, and ended up telling a guy next to him about how he'd been at the top and now how low he felt.

The guy empathized with him. He knew the feeling.

It was Joe Frazier.

Years ago I heard a similar story about Ray Davies but didn't know the sympatico was poor Joe Frazier.

BTW: Chrissie Hynde was 14 years old when "You Really Got Me" debuted. A few years later she attended Kent State when the National Guard massacred the students.

Many talented athletes, musicians, boxers, become eclipsed by the greats and their works become forgotten and less appreciated.

But they were good too.

Andy Roddick in tennis. He won only one Grand Slam.

The great boxers in the 1960s that Muhammad Ali beat.

The Zombies, Yardbirds, Kinks etc against the Beatles, the Who, and the Rolling Stones.

Great movies were also eclipsed by even greater ones and too many to name now.

But I am unable to find a video of the band in a live performance where they go into the "up against the wall" lyrics.

I even looked at the video of Jefferson Airplane at the 1969 Woodstock festival. I had thought for sure, they would have uttered those usually censored lyrics then. But, no.

Nothing.

So you have to listen starting around 3:15 into the video I linked above to hear the lyrics that so upset the whole FM radio environment back in the day ...
