This full album of Dark Side Of The Moon is dedicated to all those who traveled to their nearest planetarium for the Friday or Saturday night laser light show.

For me it was the The Bishop Planetarium. Good times!

Enjoy ...

8. The Kinks were far ahead of the Beatles in lyrical composition. And they were playing this music while the Beatles were doing "Love Me Do."

Give me Ray Davies on the condition of the working man over John Lennon. Any day.

Heard Ray Davies interviewed years ago, perhaps on Fresh Air.

The Kinks had just played in New York, and someone had dosed the brothers with LSD without them knowing it. They did not play a good show, and Davies spent the night wandering the streets.

He ended up in a Midtown Automat in the very early morning, thoroughly distraught, and ended up telling a guy next to him about how he'd been at the top and now how low he felt.

The guy empathized with him. He knew the feeling.

It was Joe Frazier.

Hi DBT2

Years ago I heard a similar story about Ray Davies but didn't know the sympatico was poor Joe Frazier.

BTW: Chrissie Hynde was 14 years old when "You Really Got Me" debuted. A few years later she attended Kent State when the National Guard massacred the students.

As you wrote about Ray Davies' lyrics: www.youtube.com

Oh, hell:

I was born in a welfare state
Ruled by bureaucracy
Controlled by civil servants
And people dressed in grey
Got no privacy, got no liberty
'Cause the twentieth century people
Took it all away from me

Don't want to get myself shot down
By some trigger happy policeman
Gotta keep a hold on my sanity
I'm a twentieth century man but I don't want to die here

Good shot. I forgot that tune.

Many talented athletes, musicians, boxers, become eclipsed by the greats and their works become forgotten and less appreciated.

But they were good too.

Andy Roddick in tennis. He won only one Grand Slam.

The great boxers in the 1960s that Muhammad Ali beat.

The Zombies, Yardbirds, Kinks etc against the Beatles, the Who, and the Rolling Stones.

Great movies were also eclipsed by even greater ones and too many to name now.

"Max Raabe and his Palast Orchester have played a significant role in reviving and preserving German cabaret, jazz, and popular music from the 1920s and 30s, much of which was composed by Jewish artists and banned as "degenerate" by the Nazis.

By performing these works, they reintroduce the elegant, ironic style lost after Hitler came to power.

Revival Efforts: Raabe and his orchestra discovered original, forgotten arrangements in flea markets and bookstores to recreate the sound of the era.

Cultural Significance: Their performances bring attention to the "lost" culture of pre-war German cabaret and the creators who were silenced by the Nazis."

No one likes us-I don't know why
We may not be perfect, but heaven knows we try
But all around, even our old friends put us down
Let's drop the big one and see what happens

We give them money-but are they grateful?
No, they're spiteful and they're hateful
They don't respect us-so let's surprise them
We'll drop the big one and pulverize them

Asia's crowded and Europe's too old
Africa is far too hot
And Canada's too cold
And South America stole our name
Let's drop the big one
There'll be no one left to blame us

We'll save Australia
Don't wanna hurt no kangaroo
We'll build an All American amusement park there
They got surfin', too

Boom goes London and boom Paree
More room for you and more room for me
And every city the whole world round
Will just be another American town
Oh, how peaceful it will be
We'll set everybody free
You'll wear a Japanese kimono
And there'll be Italian shoes for me

They all hate us anyhow
So let's drop the big one now

The Chocolate Watchband were an American garage rock band that formed in 1965 in Los Altos, California. The band went through several lineup changes during its existence.

Combining psychedelic and garage rock components, their sound was marked by David Aguilar's lead vocals, songwriting, as well as proto-punk musical arrangements.

The band's rebellious musical posture made them one of the harder-edged groups of the period with one critic labeling them as America's answer to the Rolling Stones.

OK, I have been trying to find a live performance with the original lyrics of this tune ...

Jefferson Airplane - We Can Be Together (1969)
www.youtube.com

But I am unable to find a video of the band in a live performance where they go into the "up against the wall" lyrics.

I even looked at the video of Jefferson Airplane at the 1969 Woodstock festival. I had thought for sure, they would have uttered those usually censored lyrics then. But, no.

Nothing.

So you have to listen starting around 3:15 into the video I linked above to hear the lyrics that so upset the whole FM radio environment back in the day ...

32. The band was splintering at that time. Next albums were first Starship and acoustic Hot Tuna.

Likely, they didn't perform much of Volunteers live, because it was the end of their incredible run as a band.

The Airplane's 71 album (Bark) was good, but not the same.

If you've found the meaning of the truth in this old world you are a lucky man
If knowledge hangs around your neck like pearls instead of chains you are a lucky man

Takers and fakers and talkers won't tell you
Teachers and preachers will just buy and sell you
When no one can tempt you, with heaven or hell, you'll be a lucky man
You'd be better by far to be just what you are
You can be what you want, if you are what you are
And that's a lucky man!

Count Basie and Oscar Peterson make it look and sound so easy.

Effortless.

Thanks for that post.

For years there have been a few Franz Schubert pieces that I've wanted to arrange for piano, guitar, and percussion, but time is always the enemy.

My wife just presented me with three books about JFK and I'm still enjoying Elmer Gantry.

A genuinely frightening novel awaits me afterwards: Pet Sematary.

Stephen King said that he himself couldn't read his own story for one year.
