Gold standard can't work in a growing population or one with the ultra rich. Finite number of dollars, every person born, less dollars per person. Ultra rich hoard the money, less money per person.
It is inherently deflationary. The only rational thing to do in a deflationary economy is to hoard and not spend, as your dollar will be worth more tomorrow.
Everyone hoards and doesn't spend, well, depression.
Only way a government can juice the system would be to tax the crap out of held money.
