One Oakland gas station is dealing with the aftermath when a flash mob robbery took over the store early Friday morning. Close to 70 people swarmed the 76 gas station on Hegenberger Road at 4 a.m. According to the store's owner, there was around $100,000 in losses. Sam Mardaie, the owner, said he is scared it can happen again. "They got away with it, they were here for 40 minutes. You could tear a whole city down in 40 minutes," he said. "Every time I think about it, the more it hurts." The incident was caught on surveillance video and showed people grabbing what they could. Some pulled drinks from refrigerators while other gathered stolen goods in boxes. At one point, robbers climbed over the cash register to gather more items. At the time of the robbery, there were two employees present and were supposedly threatened, per the store owner.

Violence and mass shootings often surge in the summer months, especially around the Fourth of July, historically one of the deadliest days of the year. A flurry of shootings around the holiday a year ago left more than a dozen people dead and over 60 wounded. Just two years ago, another mass shooting at a Fourth of July parade left seven people dead near Chicago. The mother of a 10-year-old boy left paralyzed by the attack said Wednesday that her family won't go to this year's parade, which is returning for the first time since the shooting. The Gun Violence Archive, which tracks mass shootings involving four or more people regardless of whether they died, shows June, July, and August have had the highest total number of mass shootings over the past decade. The lowest totals were from December through March. Independence Day topped the list with 58 mass shootings over the last 10 years " closely followed by July 5, according to the archive.
State Farm is seeking increases of as much as 52% for some of its residential insurance rates in California, which could ramp up the financial burden for many homeowners and renters in the state's troubled insurance market. It's the third major change for State Farm in California within the last year. The insurer stopped selling insurance for new homes in the state last summer, citing wildfire risks and skyrocketing construction costs. read more
