As COVID-19 and flu season ramp up, another virus is making headlines: "Bleeding eyes" virus, also known as the Marburg virus. The U.S. State Department is warning Americans against traveling to Rwanda due to an outbreak. So far, 15 people have died from the disease. A travel alert from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) urges people to "practice enhanced precautions" if traveling to Rwanda, noting that Marburg virus disease is "rare and deadly." Marburg virus disease is a rare and severe viral hemorrhagic (i.e. bleeding) fever that impacts people and other primates, including monkeys and apes, per the CDC.

Miami-Dade commissioners have approved Hialeah's renaming of a historic road after President-elect Donald Trump. Commissioners approved the resolution at a meeting Tuesday that will officially rename a four-mile stretch of Palm Avenue as "President Donald J. Trump Avenue." The Hialeah city council last year approved a proposal to rename the road for Trump after Mayor Esteban "Steve" Bovo announced the move and presented Trump with a street sign at a rally. A Monday afternoon shooting left eight people shot and three dead in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side, according to the Chicago Fire Department. The shooting occurred around 2 p.m. near West 59th Street and South St. Louis Avenue, CFD spokesman Larry Langford said. CPD Chief of Patrol Jon Hein said there were no suspects in custody as of about 5:15 p.m. The victims were four men and four women and ranged in age from 20 to 35, Hein said. Three of the men died of their wounds. The fire department had transported six to local hospitals while two of the victims had self-transported for medical treatment, he said. Police had been called to the address before, he said. Hein was unable to give many details about the shooting but said it appeared to have taken place at a social gathering.
A South Carolina mayor died in a head-on vehicle crash while being "pursued" by law enforcement just days after his town's entire police department quit, a coroner says. McColl Mayor George Garner II, 49, was killed Tuesday afternoon "when the vehicle he was driving collided head on with a truck" in Mechanicsville, according to Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee. read more
