Four years after launching a push for more diversity in its ranks, McDonald's is ending some of its diversity practices, citing a U.S. Supreme Court decision that outlawed affirmative action in college admissions. McDonald's is the latest big company to shift its tactics in the wake of the 2023 ruling and a conservative backlash against diversity, equity and inclusion programs. Walmart, John Deere, Harley-Davidson and others rolled back their DEI initiatives last year. McDonald's said Monday it will retire specific goals for achieving diversity at senior leadership levels. It also intends to end a program that encourages its suppliers to develop diversity training and to increase the number of minority group members represented within their own leadership ranks. read more
Eleven Yemeni detainees have been moved from the US military prison in Guantanamo Bay to Oman. The move has left 15 detainees in the prison in Cuba - the smallest number at any point in its history. In a statement, the Department of Defense thanked Oman for supporting US efforts "focused on responsibly reducing the detainee population and ultimately closing" the facility. None of the men captured after the 9/11 terror attacks had been charged with any crimes in their more than two decades in detention. The transfer, which reportedly happened in the early hours on Monday, comes days before the accused mastermind of the 11 September 2001 attacks on the US, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, is scheduled to plead guilty, following a deal with federal officials to avoid the death penalty. A Vallejo, California woman has put out a petition to urge Gov. Gavin Newsom to deploy more California Highway Patrol officers to her city. The California Highway Patrol will expand its presence into another Bay Area city to combat crime, weeks after a petition started by a resident urged state leaders to deploy officers to combat crime amid a local police staffing shortage. Car sideshows, where people show off their vehicles and often perform dangerous stunts in vacant lots and public intersections, as well as drug crime, shootings and shoplifting, have made life in the enclave of Vallejo much more dangerous, resident Paula Conley wrote in a petition posted on Change.org. Conley and other residents urged Gov. Gavin Newsom to deploy California Highway Patrol officers to Vallejo in similar fashion to how the governor sent CHP officers to Oakland earlier in 2024 to address a crime surge there.
The Jacksonville Jaguars (4-13) fired Doug Pederson on Monday, leaving owner Shad Khan to seek his sixth head coach since he purchased the team in November 2011. Pederson, who won a Super Bowl as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, was hired in January 2022. In his first season, Pederson led the Jaguars to a 9-8 record, AFC South title and playoff win. In 2023, the Jaguars went 9-8 again but missed the playoffs. Khan expected them to return to the postseason in 2024, but it all quickly fell apart when the Jaguars started the season 0-4. Along the way, there were embarrassing losses to the Chicago Bears, Las Vegas Raiders, New York Jets, Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions (the 46-point margin was the worst in franchise history). The Jaguars' four victories came against teams without a winning record. read more
