The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is urging Americans to fill their bellies with invasive species that are wreaking havoc on habitats across the country. As part of its National Invasive Species Awareness Week, which ends Friday, the agency released a list of five invasive creatures that they're encouraging people to hunt and eat as a way to protect native species. "Some of the biggest ecological nightmares are critters that don't belong here," the USFWS wrote in a public advisory released late last week. "Invasive species outcompete native wildlife, destroy habitats, and mess up ecosystems. But rather than just complaining about them, let's put them on the menu." read more
Federal agents arrested a California councilwoman's husband in a Walmart parking lot on Monday, a move she said came out of nowhere. Yadira Perez, who sits on the Coachella City Council, captured the moment when Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents surrounded them before arresting her husband, Isidro Jimenez-Ibanez. "My family was just separated. They have taken my kids' father. Those are the desperate cries of help," the councilmember said in a video shared on social media. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) later said the man is a Mexican national in the country illegally, with an extensive criminal record. The 51-year-old's arrest outside the Walmart in Coachella came as part of "targeted enforcement action," ICE said in a press release. read more

Roberta Flack, the Grammy-winning soul singer best known for her celebrated interpretations of romantic ballads like "Killing Me Softly With His Song," as well as her professional collaborations and social activism, has died, according to a statement from her publicist. Flack died at home surrounded by her family, Elaine Schock, her publicist, told CNN. Her death followed several years of health challenges, including a diagnosis, revealed publicly in late 2022, of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. The progressive condition, often referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, made it impossible for Flack to sing, her representatives said at the time. read more
A newly discovered bat coronavirus uses the same cell-surface protein to gain entry into human cells as the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19, raising the possibility that it could someday spread to humans, Chinese researchers have reported. The virus does not enter human cells as readily as SARS-CoV-2 does, the Chinese researchers reported in the journal Cell, opens new tab, noting some of its limitations. The scientists said that like SARS-CoV-2, the bat virus HKU5-CoV-2 contains a feature known as the furin cleavage site that helps it to enter cells via the ACE2 receptor protein on cell surfaces. In lab experiments, HKU5-CoV-2 infected human cells with high ACE2 levels in test tubes and in models of human intestines and airways. In further experiments, the researchers identified monoclonal antibodies and antiviral drugs that target the bat virus. read more
