One Dead as Flight from London Hit by Severe Turbulence

One person has died and dozens of others were injured after a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore was hit by severe turbulence, officials and the airline said.

Crazy ... I always wear my seatbelt when flying, this just reinforces that.

But I am wondering was it really turbulence? From the description it didn't sound like it. I wonder if they will investigate.

Usually if there is bad turbulence there is a PIREP (Like a notam, but pilot generated), and other pilots are aware of it, and either avoid it, or announce to passengers.

I suspect this isn't turbulence, just from the way this transpired and the amount of altitude lost..

It's difficult to stay in your seat the whole time when it's a 10+ hour flight. My first overseas flight was over 16 hours on one leg of it. I remember the advice at the time was that it was better for your health to get up for a little while (when the fasten seat belts sign is off).

But yeah, it's better to keep it on the whole time when seated.

imo, good advice.

I wold also add, that at the first sign of any turbulence, forget about walking and get back into your seat with your seat belt on.
