NORAD detected, tracked, and intercepted two Russian TU-95 and two PRC H-6 military aircraft operating in the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) on 24 July 2024. NORAD fighter jets from the US and Canada conducted the intercept. The Russian and PRC aircraft remained in international airspace and did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace. NORAD does not view this Russian and PRC activity in the Alaska ADIZ as a threat.
This joint Russian and Chinese flight was the first such occurrence in the Alaska ADIZ and was notable for being the first intercept of Chinese military aircraft near Alaska. Earlier this week, a top DoD Department official noted China's growing military interest in the Arctic region and military cooperation with Russia.
