Say hello to Hurricane Ernesto...

Maximum sustained winds are near 80 mph (130 km/h) with higher gusts. Strengthening is forecast during the next couple of days, and Ernesto could become a major hurricane by Friday.

Comments

Yeah, Puerto Rico suffered a hit.

Damage to their already damage electrical infrastructure.

Now Ernesto is looking to Bermuda.

But this is only a Cat 2 hurricane.

Lots of rain, but minor winds, relatively speaking.

But this is only a Cat 2 hurricane.

My interest is in the storm physics... where they go and how big they get is secondary. This has been an unusual season so far.

@#2 ... This has been an unusual season so far. ...

Yup.

But where they go and how big they get is a part of "the season."

OK, that aside....

We're heading into the peak season for Atlantic hurricanes.

Ernesto went out to sea, affecting mainly Bermuda, due to an upper level low over New England.

Will the east coast be so fortunate next time?

My bad. I phrased that poorly. I don't care if they hit land or not. They tend to get stronger if they do not.

@#4 ... They tend to get stronger if they do not. ...

Oh, absolutely.

Hurricanes feed upon the energy of the warm waters.

The [relatively] cool land mass they may traverse weakens them.

Hurricanes feed upon the high dewpoint warm air just above the water's surface.

That very important aspect of the hurricanes, i.e., just above the water's surface, has only been started to be measured and recorded in recent years.

To wit...

2024 NOAA-Saildrone
Atlantic Hurricane Mission
www.pmel.noaa.gov

... The 2024 NOAA saildrone Atlantic hurricane observation mission includes 12 saildrones in the western Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico (see deployment map below), following the success of the experimental 2021, 2022, and 2023 missions. New to the 2024 mission are sensors for measurement of surface carbon fluxes. Keep up with the progress of the 2024 mission on its blog.

Objectives

(1) Measure near-surface atmospheric and upper-ocean parameters to calculate energy, momentum and CO2 fluxes between the atmosphere and ocean outside and within hurricanes. ...

It's "hola".
