Tropical Storm Andrea becomes first named system

An area of stormy weather in the open Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda and the Azores became Tropical Storm Andrea on Tuesday morning, the first of the Atlantic hurricane season, according to the National Hurricane Center. Andrea is not a threat to land. The storm is roughly 1,200 miles away from The Azores, or about 1,400 miles east of the US East Coast, with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph as of 11:00 a.m. ET Tuesday.

It's starting ...


And, fwiw, here in the northeast, we are in a major heat wave.

Too early in the season for this to occur, but there it is.

Back in the mid-80's when I decided to control the climate within my house, I determined that 24,000BTU of air-conditioning would be cool, so to speak.

Fast forward, 40 years later ...

Today, the air-conditioning can keep up with maintaining the house at 80 degrees, with a dew point in the mid-50's. But the compressor runs nearly 100% of the time.

Quite the change from 40 years ago when I had asked myself if I had over-estimated the amount of cooling I needed for the house, because the compressor back then ran less than 50% of the time.

What has changed in the past 40 years?

Just for an anecdotal laugh, I had 3" of snow on my lawn last Saturday.

I've been seeing a trend here.

And, speaking of snow ...

Back in the day I bought a 10-horse power snow blower to clear my driveway and sidewalks.

(and, if I may add, an Ariens snow blower, made by this great and proud American company ... www.ariens.com )

I used to use it multiple times per winter.

The past two winters, it just sat in the garage, unused.

I ask again ...

What changed?

No. It' not even all that unusual, but snow on the first day of summer was fairly amusing. Trees took a big hit.

On the other hand, two winters in a row, without having to use the snow blower to clear the driveway and sideways is quite unusual here.

I had previously needed to use the snow blower multiple times per winter.

But, these past two winters ... the snow blower just sat idle.
