Guitarist and Stax Records Legend Steve Cropper Dies

Steve Cropper, the lean, soulful guitarist and songwriter who helped anchor the celebrated Memphis backing band Booker T. and the M.G.'s at Stax Records and co-wrote the classics "Green Onions," "(Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay" and "In the Midnight Hour," has died. He was 84.

In the 1960s, Booker T. and the MGs album covers prominently displayed two white and two black performers together, which led some record storeowners to display them in the shadows or on the side, while other merchants proudly displayed them up front. Sadly, there were few mixed race bands in the early to mid-1960s.

Like the uber-talented behind-the-scenes Wrecking Crew, Booker T. and the MGs never appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show or the Tonight Show.
